Empress Wu

Does she take awhile to get acclaimated before showing growth? I planted her over a month ago, along with GE and City Lights. GE and CL are sending out new leaves, but other than 1 smallish scape, EW is doing nothing, nada. She doesn't seem to be buried too deep, the soil was really loamy and I've been watering like crazy!

You just planted her a month ago... I think some patience is order lol.... first year they sleep eh? creep then leap right..

Yes, definitely get it planted outside if that's the case...they are not meant to be indoor plants. Are you sure that's Empress Wu? I thought it was more blue and the leaves are fuller in shape? Or maybe that develops later on...

Here's a picture of mine three years old in 2015; for some reason I don't have a good picture from this year. This year she was about 36" tall and 50" across, but she's pretty tired and tattered now in October. Not picture-worthy. I have moved this hosta every year. Imagine how big she'd be if I leave her alone! I have to move it again next year as I installed a privacy fence on the property line and the Empress is too close to it. She will be moved toward more sun - she's in pretty heavy shade now.

Miles, warm! I wish. We manage an odd day when it reaches 51ºF then back to the middle 40s. Today a maximum of 49º and more rain. zkathy, I got her about 5 years ago as a single division. She spent 2 years in a pot and then was planted out. This is the third spring in that position. This is her after planting out in May 2015 She gets full sun all day ( nowhere near as strong as some of you get ). Also lots of rain. I'm situated south facing on the side of a hill about 850 feet above sea level. If it continues increasing at this rate it should be amazing in a couple of years time. Dave

The soil is just on the top, compost is under. It is a rain barrel cut in half after breaking. So drainage is good. Look at last pic, those round corrugated leaves is what I bought as WU. Heck knows what happened. I do not remember it much in the pot, was busy, then I got tired of waiting it to grow big so I dumped it behind the fence. Maybe it was bad batch?

If it is starting to send up a scape (I assume it has leaves?) then that's why you aren't seeing any other growth. When hostas start to flower they don't put up any more foliage but usually switch over to creating more dormant buds for next year instead.

Empress Wu usually takes a couple years to settle in before it starts to look like anything.

Mine burned up leaves the first summer of 2010 in too much sun. I placed it in Fall of 2010 then in shade and continued watering a lot. In 2010 it was 2 to 3 eyes in a pot, now 8 eyes and 72 inches (6 ft, 2 yard sticks!) wide, 32 inches tall, scapes are 50 inches, all in 2 years! So keep a lot of space.

I guess I am being a tad too impatient, I'm just so excited waiting on some Wu action. Two years right now seems like an eternity.

You're in the root growth time of the growing season.

Mine was 1 1/2 eyes first season. 4 eyes 2nd season. 8 eyes this season and 4 1/2 feet across.
