How's your plant doing? Did you ever find anything?

I use fish tank change water in and around the perennial beds, but never where I keep edibles. Most water conditioners are not meant for human consumption. Many contain heavy metal chelators, slime coat protectors and who knows what else. The manufacturers of water conditioners donÂt typically disclose the ingredients, nor are they required to by law. ThereÂs another practical reason not to use fish tank change water in the veggie garden in a general sense, because change water can be high in N (NO3), which is great for plant growth but not something you want to give to tomatoes and peppers when they are flowering or fruiting. My garden plantings are pretty compact so it would be hard to just water the leafy greens and not have it reach the toms and peppers. Better to give these guys P & K and hold back on the N a little.

Oh my goodness. I know this probably doesn't have to do with anything....but yarrow is an amazing plant. I've read about it's medicinal characteristics, but got to put them to practice recently. The yarrow I'm talking about is the wild kind. In May, we couldn't mow--no need to explain why--so lot's of wild plant grew up on our property. Yarrow was one of them. I had noticed the feathery fern-ish plant last year when we first moved in, but the plant was always mowed over before it could grow much. Somehow I knew it was a special plant and even dug some up and put it in a pot to take in over the winter. It lived, but that was about all. Anyway, from those feathery leaves come a white flower with a yellowish center...and it's yarrow. I found that out when we couldn't mow. I've read that it's been called "soldier's woundwort". A couple of weeks ago,, I cut myself in the garden and chewed up a leaf and applied it to the cut--it stopped the bleeding within seconds. I have canker sores often. Very annoying and painful. Earlier this week I chewed up a leaf and put it on the inside of my lip. And repeated the next morning. The soreness of the canker sore went away. If you have canker sores, you can appreciate this. I cut a few of the plants and am in the process of making a tincture with it. Yarrow is a good plant to know.
