Green leaf Japanese Maple Tamukemaya?

Hi, All:

Newbie for Japanese Maple needs some help here. I just bought this Japanese Maple. After some research I do not think it is Tamukeyama (it is more like a viridis)? All the pictures Tamukeyama I saw online are red leaf. This tree sat in the store without nature light for more than 2 weeks - this might be the reason that the leaves turned back to green? I was hoping to get a tamukeyama with red leaves. Does tamukeyama have green leaves when it is young or when leaves are new? The label says it is tamukeyama, although one of the label spells the word wrong. It is sucks that you can not trust the label anymore. What could it be if it is not tamukeyama?

Sorry my title spells the tamukeyama wrong and I can not correct it after post.

Is it grafted?..ie can you make out a join in the trunk between the soil and the lowest branch?

I think so. (but what do I know :) See pic there seems a scare on the trunk. Also, the leaves are tinted with more red now. (or is it sunburn?)

Bus- Sounds good. I'll snap a picture and upload it later tonight. The maples I have are roughly 30-36" and are just shooting out their leaves (perfect for shipping right now). I have yet to trade (new) so maybe you can guide me along here. Yes they have been rooted by me and require the ideal conditions and climate (my personal experience).

Well, I have no idea about UK, but in the US highway plantings are done by government agencies, and government agencies buy their plant material from other government agencies (like the tree seedlings in bulk available through the Arbor Day foundation in combination with the U.S. Forest Service). I would think it safe to say that no government agency is footing the bill for fancy cultivars or grafted trees when the species trees are available in mass quantities, are extremely cost efficient (cheap), thrive in the local conditions, and (to most laypeople) look just as good. So (to me anyway) the likelihood of highway plantings being straight up seedling grown Acer palmatum var. atropurpureum are very high. But then again, Vertrees said "because many nurseries have used this name for any red-leaved seedling selection, it has become so diluted as to be meaningless." So you never know.

I would consider that normal, yes :-) Young JM's, and most especially those that are newly planted, will often go through some color changes. And even some early leaf drop. But keep it well hydrated (not soaked) and it should replace whatever is lost. I recently purchased an 'Enkan' and much of the growth is greening out. And all new growth is coming in green rather than red. But it is in less sun than it was at the nursery :-) Your new tree may be in more sun than it is used to, hence some early coloring.

Your tree looks like it has been in full shade for a long time. It may be a generic green weeper or it may need to be planted in at least half-day sun eastern exposure prefered and see if it will color-up a little better for you and then maybe leaf out more red next spring to make sure what you have.

You'll know sunburn :-) Foliage will look scorched (brown), not take on reddish tints.

This certainly could be Tamukeyama. Red leaved maples can lose much of their coloring if not exposed to some sunlight, let alone natural daylight. You will know soon enough - the red should gradually develop as the tree becomes used to the sunlight. Avoid full day sun immediately - the tree needs to become gradually acclimated - but it can easily tolerate it once that occurs.

Thanks Al and gardengal, I also think it is more and more like tamukeyama as the leaves tinted with more red as days go by. It is right now under a big pine tree and get direct light maybe 2 hours in the morning only. I will acclimate it gradually. The rootball looks like wrapped in burlap (I can see a little bit burlap above the soil) then put in the pot and added more soil around it. Do I need to do anything about that right now? I am planning to keep it as potted plant and overwinter it in my garage, is that a viable plan?
