any local nurseries carrying Austin roses?

The few around here--Moody's, O'Donal's, Skillins, don't have much of a selection of them, and most varieties I have already. Once in a great while I get lucky and find one at a Home Depot, but their rose selection this year is pathetic, worse than usual.

I'm building a new rose bed and would love to not have to wait for next spring and mail order.

I have purchased Austins at Gingerbread Farms in Wayne, Maine, but the slection was limited. I also know that Old Sheep Meadow Farms in Alfred carries them. You might check and see what they have left. Last time I was there, I really didn't like the attitude, but if you're desperate. . . :)

how do you get to Gingerbread Farms in Wayne. looked through all 5 of my phone books but never seam to do well with them and that is so close I would love to stop (during the many miles I drive every week) LOL Thanks for your time...

Flowergirl, I understand wanting to see the roses in person before you buy. That's why I take at least one trip per year to Roses Unlimited. For me, it's about 3 1/2 hours away. If it's early, they let me wonder through all their greenhouses. I know the plants are babies but I can still see the bloom on most of them. If I go later, they have many roses planted around. It's fun and I learn alot. If you can ever get to somewhere like Rogue Valley Roses, I would think they would let you visit the nursery. They have been VERY helpful to me on the phone. You could call and ask. PLUS, if you are thinking about a particular rose, post here and you will get great input from folks in your area about how it performs for them. Even though I prefer to see before I buy, I've grown to trust the folks on this forum. Hope you find what you're looking for.

I know the gentleman who bred Hydrangealicious. It is more meant for colder, shorter seasons with higher disease pressures where it should perform much better than many others on the market. We've entered more of the niche marketing for roses. Tom Carruth seems to have started the trend years ago with his more honest wholesale catalog descriptions. He would state a rose required heat to flourish; lasted better in cooler, damper climates or required several years to show its stuff. CP-Star is now doing similarly. They didn't push the Eyeconic series where black spot is extreme as they aren't strongly resistant to that line of fungi. They also didn't push Hydrangealicious where the seasons are too long and the shorter flowering season of the rose might be an issue. I've seen the Phloxy Baby here in local nurseries and it looked charming. I didn't purchase it because the flowers are so small and petals appeared so fragile, I questioned whether they would hold up in the extreme heat and sun of my hill. All of the bud and bloom plants I saw in nurseries had fried flowers, which could have been due to the extreme weekend and lack of watering, but for something in a mixed border, this one should be good. It's a Radler rose and is touted as being "very disease resistant". It's also classed as a polyantha, which is a very nice touch. It's been a long time since there was a major introducer here adding to the poly class. It's a neat example of the wide diversity available in roses. I think it might also make a wonderful standard. You should take a look at it. The name is a bit of a clumsy marketing move, but we've had others with names reminiscent of other flower types (Phalaenopsis, Aster, etc.). Kim

Judith, thanks for the idea. What I was thinking of is slightly nuts: I'm planning on being in Dallas in April, when bareroots are just hitting the nurseries here in NY & the selection is very limited. I don't want to order in advance as I've been disappointed in the past when I got puny plants in the mail; I want to see the plant in person to check out the canes & blooms. It's also much more fun to make a selection that way. SO I got this idea of shopping in Texas & either shipping them back home to NY or somehow pack them up for travel & sneaking them into my suitcase. DH thinks I'm certifiable. It might work. or not.

Thanks mainerose, I'll look up the phone# for Gingerbread Farms. I don't even know where Wayne is!

I will no longer shop at Old Sheep Meadow Farms due to two awfully bad experiences with that lady. It's a shame because they do have a good selection. But even though I am desperate I swore I won't go back there. Heard lots of other complaints too.

Hi! I agree, Veilchen---too bad that they don't have better people skills. I think they're even worse that the folks at the Roseraie at Bayfields used to be! I get all my roses from High Country Roses in Utah---shipping is expensive, but they have a good selection of antiques and they are very nice to deal with. Not sure about Austins---I've tried them, but am really just one zone too cold. Does Suzie Verrier in Phippsburg carry any Austins?

Thanks mainerose! I'll call them today. I don't think Suzy Verrier has very many (if any) Austins, mostly rugosas and gallicas.

Too bad it's too late for mail order.
