Bent Japanese Maple (Emperor One). Can I dig out after one year?
Comments (3)Hi Dsqx, big transplant I would vote against trying to tilt this tree. If you must think of it as lifting up one end and shoving more dirt in on that side. No need to torture your back and your father's back again. Man, you two planted a 13' tall tree! Reasons against: -It is a tree, and a Japanese maple at that. It just is not going to grow straight as an arrow and Japanese maples have a bit of a unique form anyway. -As you noticed with all the damage last year, Emperor I and all JM's I know are only marginal in zone 5. Transplanting and digging up before winter stresses them further. I wonder if early spring would be better if you decide to do this. Maybe the high res picture will convince me otherwise. Maybe I am just sorta a hippie with a less formal landscape lol. Either way, good luck and I am impressed with the work you must have done planting it!...See MoreDwarf Japanese Maple - Crack where branch meets trunk.
Comments (3)Bolting or cabling is very common to salvage split branching or to prevent against further damage. There were multiple discussions on this topic here a couple of seasons ago after a heavy, wet snowfall and a lot of damage to weeping laceleaf maples (which tend to accumulate and hold snow in their branches). Do a Google search on "tree bolting or cabling" - you'll find various resources and videos showing you precisely how to do so. Contrary to what many think, if a split branch or fork is not immediately addressed (within 24-36 hours), the tree begins to compartmentalize amd seal off the injury and if that happens, the split will never grow back together and will remain a structural weakness and liable to further damage. IMO, cabling or bolting in this situation is the ONLY way to go. Here is a link that might be useful: cabling a tree...See MoreHelp with my one branch Japanese Maple please
Comments (9)Replace the zip ties as stated above. If there is any pliability in the trunk just above where your top tie is now, you may have a chance. Put one stake on the side where it is leaning and tie it off where your top tie is now. Put a second stake on the opposite side with a tie above the branch below the car door. GENTLY see how high you can lift that bend before you feel too much resistance and tie it high on that second stake. Come back in a month and see if you can lift it any higher. The key is how pliable that bend is. tj...See MoreJapanese maple leaves/branch trailing on the ground, is that good?
Comments (2)Low graft weeping Japanese maples often have branches that trail along the ground or form a "skirt". Many folks like that look and it won't hurt the tree at all......a lot of conifers do the same thing :-) What you don't want to do is trim all the branches off at some arbitrary height like you were creating a bowl haircut!!...See Morechriswilson.pe
