Look for siblings. They hatch from a cocoon and there are a bazillion babies....if other predators don't get them.

thanks Linda. I Googled to see what their cocoon looks like to give me an idea. He really lit up on the brown mulch, seems like it would be easy to spot more now that I'm looking for them purposely!
In almost 30 years, I've only ever seen 2 adults out there, so I hope a lot of them make it!

Cute baby! A number of years ago, we stopped at a rest stop in NC; as we were walking in, my grandson casually said, "Oh, there's a praying mantis" (like you see one every day!).

I'm amazed . . . you're in 5B but you still have columbine blooming? (beautiful columbine, BTW). I'm in 5 is SW PA; my columbine finished probably a month ago. My daylilies are starting and early hosta are blooming. Nance

I saw a tiny one in my garden yesterday,also. Haven't seen too many of any of them,though. Phil

One of our neighbors took one of the cocoons inside her house and it hatched. She had tiny little critters everywhere. Hundreds of them. They opened up all their windows and hoped most of them went out. They are so tiny when they are hatched.

tomahawk, I wish they were still blooming! The pic is from a month ago, just dried seed pods now.
And I STILL haven't moved that Potomic Pride, lol.

I've only seen a couple of praying mantis is my life and last year I found one.....in my hair. I came in from outside, sat down at the computer, felt something on my head, brushed it off, and it was....yup....a praying mantis, and definitely not a baby. What a surprise..... I do wish I would see more of them around, although preferably not in my hair next time....

i saw one years ago and this year found two cocoons and babies all over...the thrill of my life. i am excited every time i see one no matter how many i've seen :)
