Split an order of chicks to central MD anyone?

Like Jane, I'm not sure if anyone even checks in here anymore...

I am looking to order no more than a dozen day old chicks... Was hoping to find someone to share an order with as I otherwise would need to order the 25 minimum for shipment. Hoping to get sexed Buff Orpingtons, Wyandots and EE... Am new to all this (but of course have lurked like crazy at GW learning)and am open to anyone's suggestions. I've already contacted my local feed and tractor store but they won't take orders - you take whatever they get in... Am also open to local folks with young pullets to sell (or just meeting other chicken & garden obsessed neighbors). Thanks for any replies/ideas!

Oh gee! I remember getting chicks and ducklings in the mail as a kid! The shipment of mixed ducklings was mine to raise and care for--I've had a soft spot or them ever since. Unfortunately, they are farm animals and as such are specifically forbidden within these city limits.

You can raise poultry as long as it's at least 100 ft from residences. We have in Damascus. Watch out for raccoons and foxes, though, they wiped us out several times. I'd love to share, but need to repair the coop first. I saw some plastic fencing for poultry that would last longer than the chicken wire we used at American Fabric and Netting, which is online. Thanks very much for the site - it looks PERFECT! Checked it out also at backyardchickens and see it has as good a rep as most. I'm excited and look forward to sharing more here once my chickies arrive! Must admit that hubby is now pushing a bigger order w/Cornishxs and I want to add some Delawares too after reading here... Might just end up w/25 anyway... (Joking - I HOPE!)

I have ordered from McMurray, once a few years ago, and then just this spring. I had gotten 25 chicks the first time, they were great birds, the white leghorns lay like crazy! Even years later, if I give them a break during the winter, they start laying like fiends. I don't like the taste as much as the araucana hen eggs though. Those are the best tasting eggs, as far as chicken eggs go, IMO. This year, I got 27 chicks and the homesteaders delight. I learned to never order banties with full size chickens ever again. The 3 Japanese banties I got, one was DOA. Also the weather was very cold when they were shipped, which didn't help. :( The second banty wasn't looking very well, and died the next day. :( Another bird (a golden campine) had been acting funny, the poor thing would walk around in circles, and would twist its neck. The little one didn't eat and died 3 days later. Not sure if it was born with a neurological problem or what. None of the other birds have caught anything, so I'm guessing it was either a genetic defect or a neurological problem? So far I had one duckling die from the Homesteaders delight, not sure why. It had a closed eye when I got it, and it died from unknown causes a few days after I got it. Other than that the other chicks seem okay. I may try another hatchery because I want to try and find some different chickens and muscovy ducks. It's always good to shop around, IMO. Murray McMurray have good shipping prices however. Customer service is okay.

OCDeverything, Unless you have a highly unique situation (such as, you are building a display that includes larger Green Giants and need it to be complete in the near future), you are making a mistake by starting with Green Giants that big. You're trees will take much longer to overcome transplant shock, will grow more slowly for at least a few years than similar smaller trees, will require much more labor to properly plant, will be more expensive to purchase, and almost certainly will have an inferior root structure that is less able to adapt to their new environment. In most all situations, you'd be far better served by 1 to 5-gallon plants.

i have a question, i have hens and chicks, have had them for prolly like 5 to 10 years, and they have never bloomed not a single one, these plants have been through, droughts without watering, theyve just sit there in the same spot for that time, i have sorta seperated a few in some old pots, that had formerly had old dirt from other plants that have died, the hens and chicks themselves are big, and cover the entire surface of the soil in most of the pots, they are healthy and green as well, why no blooms, seriously not even one, any help would be muchly appreciated

One of my friends just got some chicks from a neighbor who is hatching eggs - send me an email and I'll give you her contact info. Also, my husband told me that Tractor Supply in Mt. Airy has chicks for sale, so you might want to give them a call.

Susan Thank YOU very much for checking in over here and offering such great suggestions! I did find a(somewhat) local feedstore that would/could order the breeds I'm looking for and am eagerly awaiting their arrival. Should have some Buff Orpingtons, Wyandottes, R.I.R and even CornishXs and guineas by May. Those, along with the beautiful large goldfish I picked up from "Watergal" here at MAG exchanges will keep my kids entertained and me even busier! Am just so thrilled that spring has finally sprung and I can start new projects like my pond and dividing, dividing, dividing my plants to make MORE! ;-)

Hi Leslie -- I'm glad you found a source for chicks -- they're a lot of fun, but a lot of work, too. I don't miss slogging out to feed them in the winter! It's always fun to check for eggs. I used to let them wander around the yard from time to time outside their pen, but they were very distructive to the gardens. They always make a beeline for the most lush place that will have worms to scratch (my husband was not pleased, as his gardens were always more popular with the hens, and they'd leave a circle of mulch outside the edge of the whole garden. Your kids will have fun catching them -- I used to have a heck of a time rounding them up back to their pen - it was pretty hilarious. I currently have a nest of deer mice in the laying boxes; not very useful, but cute (as long as they stay outside).
I'm not sure if I'll make the swap, as I really shouldn't be adding anything at this point, but it would be fun to come and meet people and talk gardening.
