Trellis for pole beans

How high does the trellis for pole beans need to be? I'm putting in pole beans (Forex and Rattlesnake) next year and am planning on using the existing garden fence which is field fence about 5' tall. Should I find a way to make it taller? I could replace the field fence with a 6' cattle panel if I need to.

Well let me say that 5 feet of trellis isn't enough...If you can fix the cattle panel to the fence and extend the trellis, I would do that...I have a 6 foot fence that I use and my beans were climbing into the sky from there...at one spot they were 6 feet into a tree...They say you shouldn't have your trellis any higher than you can reach...I just took the tendrils and started them down instead of up...but I wished that my fence was a bit higher....but I couldn't have reached the beans...as it was, at the end of the season, I pulled the vines out of the tree and picked dry beans.

This isn't my idea. I first read about it on the internet and then seen it in action at a friends garden. She took the cattle panel and bent it into an arch. Plant your beans at the bases and walk through the tunnel and pick your beans.

I've grown "Burpee's burpless' vining cucumbers for 5-6 years now. They are long (sometimtes 18" if they get away from me) thin skinned and delicious. I have 3 pvc pipe frames, dug into the ground about 1 1/2 feet, with a pvc cross piece. I use nylon 6"x6" trellis net. The top pole is woven thru the netting and the bottom is held down with a rod which lays on the ground. The net will last 4-5 years before replacing (sooner if the deer run thru it) I use the same setup for the pole beans and peas. Jessica, If you like a sweet bi-color, I suggest Ambrosia. It is a 75 day corn that is reliable. I suppose you could plant 3 rows the long way if they are not crowded in the rows. To ensure good pollination, shake the upper parts of the stalks and watch the pollen dust fly to the silks. As far as blowing over in a storm when the ground is wet and soft before the wind hits, you just have to hope for the best unless you prewire before hand. If they blow over, straighten them back up.

the deer fence has 4"X4" openings, supposed to be sturdy but thin. I plan to use plastic twin horizontally to help reinforce it and "T" posts every 8'. I never pruned tomato plants but had a very good harvest last year when everyone around me had poor produce that came in to late and was froze out. I picked tomato from end of July to mid Sept before the frost hit. Others did not get good tomatoes until end of August. As far as I can see the only difference is that I spread ash from my outside wood boiler on the garden. A neighbor remodeled a boarding kennel and I got all the decent chain link panels and scrap pieces of 2"X4" and 4"X4", the scrap pieces are on average 4' square. Would it work to weld them together to make 4'X8' sections and make "A" frame trellises or will the openings be to small?

A good rule is "high as you can reach". Pole beans will grow that tall and more. When they grow off the top of the trellis the tops will flop over, but that's OK.

Another approach is to clip off the tops of the vines when they reach the top of your trellis, whatever its height. I was reminded of this today while perusing the pole bean section of Fearing Burr's 1885 book, Field and Garden Vegetables of America, although his reason for doing this is a little different.

He says, "The maturity of some of the later sorts will be somewhat facilitated by cutting or nipping off the leading runners when they have attained a height of four or five feet."

I think I will try that to speed up some of my late maturing varieties, as well as to use shorter poles.

Do you put your trellis in north to south direction or east to west? Which is better?

I had been using 6' round cages I contructed for pole beans. This year, these will be used for vining snap peas. For my pole beans, I am buying 52"x16' cattle panels made of 4 gauge galvenized metal. I plan on cutting these in half and using each 52"x8' panel for one variety of pole beans. They will be staked with two 7' heavy duty metal T-posts.
