Deanna: I too had the same problem in Z6 for the past 2 years (this is my 3rd). I have a Jackmani and Henryi next to it. No problem with H. but my J. started turning the mottled color 3 yrs ago. Thinking hubby hit it with Weed n Feed, I waited and about 1/2 the lower greens turned a yellow green veined look BUT produced perfect flowers on the upper green leaves..looked terrible though! After posting, I got a bit of help...Jeanne in TX is right....I had to top dress last year and add nutrients. Also possibly ground is so poor it will not release the proper nutrients if you have them. This year (3 yrs later and putting blue tarps down to prevent the Weed n Feed problem), it only has about 1/5 of the greens that way....not perfect but improving and looks less. I also was going to dig and toss if not improved this year...I can now save it!!! It took a few years to get in this condition and will take a few to get out of it...patience please. Use that manure for sure and Epsom salts too. Check with your nursery person also...mine indicated LEAF CHLOROSIS for which I also used Iron Sulfate by Bionide...look that up on the Internet...this has helped a lot. Well, it´s dead. But some plants in the same container seem to be doing OK, which have obviously had the same conditions. We can only really guess at the reason, could even be some obscure infection, or no real reason at all, but like other folks say, your soil does look a bit suspect. There are as many favourite soil mixes as there are growers, and I have now firmly settled on a well-draining gritty mix with a good proportion of limestone for my desert cacti, with just a little organic material. I totally avoid soggy peat, which means any commercial ´cactus mix´, as they are invariably full of peat or even worse - ´forest product´- read sawdust. A gritty mix in unglazed terra cotta pots will set you up. Err on the dry side rather than overwater - it is quite difficult to kill a cactus through underwatering. They are succulents - they will store water when it rains heavily, then be well able to survive drought conditions for weeks or even months.

Sorry Emily, but I don't see the problem. The leaves don't look dry from here & I don't know what you mean by 'crippled leaves' . I can't see the soil at all & I'd like to. Usually, folks have problems w/ their Fittonas drying out, where they literally wilt, collapse & then dry out to then become brittle & crunchy. Since that is not the case w/ yours, I don't know what you think is wrong. These plants usually need very high humidity, I've only been able to grow them in terrariums or the bathroom. How long have you had the plant pls, what kind of soil is that? Does the pot have a hole? Sorry for all the Questions, but all those factors matter in the care of the plant.
