A horticulturist told me some time back that malathion is the safest insectide on the market. Has anyone else heard this or have any information about it?

Safety is relative; nothing is absolutely safe. Malathion is a level III which carrys the caution label.As a comaparison Rotenone is a level I (DANGER label) in liquid concentrates, but level three in dusts. Toxity to humans is higher than Malathion ( LD 50 of 300 mg per kilogram of body weight. Malathion takes in excess of 1000 mg per kilogram of body weight. For comparisons use the link

.... looks like you have all the answers you need. I hope you fare well. When I said no one has taken me to task for suggesting that an understanding of how water behaves in soils is probably the largest step forward a container gardener can make at any one time, I wasn't inviting you or anyone to 'take me to task'. If you really want to have that conversation (about how important that understanding really is) let me know, and I'll happily oblige you. Can you think of a larger step forward a container gardener can make at any one time? A huge % of the problems people come here seeking remediation for are directly related to soil choice as a primary, and watering habits as a secondary. When you DO get the soil right, you actually have to work at over-watering. If you can't water to beyond saturation at will, you're dealing with soil limitations. There is no way around that. And FWIW, how water behaves in media is governed by the laws of physics, so water DOES behave exactly the same way in any given soil in every environment with some minor allowances for altitude. Even changes in wind velocity and temperature don't change how water behaves in media except as it relates to the rate of evaporation or evapotranspiration. The term effort:return relationship takes into account the quality of the returns you get for your efforts. Some people simply spin their wheels year after year, going through the same paces and getting the same return for their effort. Others, who might be willing to invest a little effort in learning how to identify and eliminate those factors imposing limitations on their plants are going to leave the 'it's always worked for me' crowd in their slipstream. when used as directed, any pesticide available off the shelf of any open to the public retailer is safe. the key here is the first phrase, WHEN USED AS DIRECTED. every one of my garden hoses has a label that states "this hose or it's components contains lead, a substance know to teh state fo California to cause cancer". i don't plan on eating the fittings, so the lead ain't gonna hurt me. i also do not drink from my pesticide dispensers, and i wash off fully immediately after applying pesticides. i have been directly sprayed before, and i can tell you it ain't no fun. when i worked for the USDA doing pesticide experiments, we were working a field hand counting bugs on the cotton. a crop duster sprayed the wrong field and soaked 7 of us. we all had to take off for a few days due to nausea and our eyes burning. this is why fields have signs up that NO ONE may enter for any reason. when i spray around my house, the same things goes, no people allowed in the area until it dries. and no, i am not baiting people with posts about pesticides. pesiticide use is very common in my area. most folks still use the sevin dust, i switched to liquid for both ease of application and less collateral damage to the environment.

Carol, you are right about caterpillars doing better in cool weather with the wasps disappearing. I have found 2 'wild' caterpillars in the last couple of days...the first living ones I have found since early July. The chrysalis, which are mainly attached to my patio fence, hardly ever survive - they are often 'adopted' by a garden spider. That is why I move them to a safe place whenever I find them. I keep them right outside my window, attached to a repurposed jewelry tree, where I can watch them hatch. They are protected by a 'moat' to protect them from ants, spiders.

The following is simply pure peculation, but previous replies have been concerned only with controlling the ants, whereas I am looking at a different aspect of your original post. That said - Are you certain the ants actually are eating the caterpillars?? Perhaps something like the following is going on – although swallowtails are NOT the caterpillar species associated with ant activity. (See below.) [Or perhaps the question to ask is -- are you certain your caterpillars are swallowtail larvae? I'm sorry to suggest it since the larvae of Papilionidae & Lycaenidae families are very different in appearance & size!] Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia (I know, but…sometimes…) "A myrmecophile is an organism that lives in association with ants. Myrmecophiles may have various roles in their host ant colony. Many consume waste materials in the nests, such as dead ants, dead larvae, or fungi growing in the nest. Some myrmecophiles, however, feed on the stored food supplies of ants, and a few are predatory on ant eggs, larvae, or pupae. Others benefit the ants by providing a food source for them. Most associations are facultative, benefiting one or both participants but not being necessary to their survival, but many myrmecophilous relationships are obligate, meaning one or the other participant requires the relationship for survival. Myrmecophilous associations are best known in butterflies of the family Lycaenidae.
