My grandmothers plant started roting and became mushy so I took it and tried to heal it. I did some research finding no heal was available. So i cut off the notch about half way. I put that in a cup of distilled water and forgot about it and all the water evaporated! I then put the plant in a make shift pot with distilled water and got 3 roots!! My question is since its a notch will it grow into a bamboo stem or what should i do with it now. Before this i cut of the tip of a notch of my other bamboo in my frogs tank to see what would happen, It grew about 2" of stem. The problem is there is only that one root. The plant is about an 1" tall. Is that a bad thing cause both my plants have different # of stems. They are both green and look healthy but my grandma's notch is a tad yellow at the very bottom.

I have one that has green on outside then a stripe of white, then green, so on, does this sound like what you have?? (Warneckii) That is one of my favorite Dracaenas, but Lucky Bamboo is just solid green, to me the foliage looks like ribbons of green on it. Bamboo is usually sold as mature bare roots or in little ceramic containers, if yours was sold in soil, I would say it is NOT lucky bamboo. They make the most off of commercialism unfortunatly. Margainata has spiky leaves that grow up from the base, as the plant matures lower leaves drop and fall leaving a elognated bare stem, it can grow to ten feet, it has deep green with purple margins. anyhoo:) I can post a pic of my Lucky Bamboo and my Warneckii, if you are still unsure?

Thank you for your nice compliments. Plant has a lot of meaning to me... Giving to me by my dear Mother, who has now passed. It was just maybe a foot tall when she gave it to me. It fit under the upper kitchen cabinet. Now it has grown to almost 7 ft in height. The stems are flimsy. I have spikes to hold it up. Last night, I cleaned each leaf with water and mild dish soap. Today I gave it new soil and weak diluted miracle gro fertilizer. The roots were red, so I know it's still healthy. Hoping all my efforts does the trick and get Lucky with my Lucky Bamboo not dying.

Avoid direct sunlight as it will scorch the leaves. They are more tolerant of too little light than too much. If the plant begins to stretch, however, or the green fades, provide more light. Temperature: Lucky bamboo likes warmer temperatures of between 65ºF and 90ºF. Do not place the plants in front of air conditioning or heating vents. Potting Media: In addition to water, lucky bamboo can be grown in a well-drained, rich potting soil. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking. Water as you would any Dracaena species. The Dracaena genus has provided some of the sturdiest houseplants available today, including the every-popular D. deremensis. These plants, which are native to Africa, have been used as houseplants since at least the mid-19th century and are still popular because they possess the single most important quality in a houseplant: they’re pretty and fairly hard to kill.
