removing stamens to prolong blooming

I have been removing the stamens from my Casablanca trumpet lily blooms as soon as it's possible to do so.

This does indeed prolong the blooming period--however, I am wondering if there is any evidence that doing this has a detrimental effect on the plant itself.

Does anyone know?

Wow...never thought of this. It really works? I have noticed that the stamens are removed on florist lilies, but thought that was done to keep pollen from dusting the blooms. I assume this can be done to any type, not just orientals?

I have grown Basye's Purple for over a decade. Randy is right about the rugosa heritage. It rises to five feet in a shallow rose bed with clusters of five blooms to a spray at the end of short stems. The blooms are single, purple, fragrant and short lived. Once the relatively disease free plant (in my climate) starts blooming, it continues to the end of the season. However, compared to other plants in my garden, it is a late starter; the leafing out process may run a month behind other plants at the beginning of its stay in the garden. One of my plants is placed in an array of roses including the china Buttercream, Route 66 and Joasine Hanet. The other is in a bed by itself with minis at the bottom including, Erin Alonso, Surprise Surprise, Smoke Signals and Iced Tea. It needs little pruning except for the removal of dead wood. Jiminshermanoaks and I visited Gracie one marvelous afternoon for that trip. She was gracious, lovely and a real hoot! She was one of the "good old girls" network with June Grose and a few others. Very neat lady in all respects and none of them will ever be replaced. "Her rose" is a very lovely shrub in these parts. Those coral pink anthers, which don't often show well in photographs (but are rather well depicted in Lyn's); her ease of growth and incessant flowering make her well worth a place in anyone's garden. She grew in mine for many years and required nothing of me other than water. She isn't in my current one because I could never get her seeds to germinate nor anything worthwhile of her pollen. Had I the room, her rose would be here simply because of its beauty and to honor a lovely lady. Kim

Wow, yes, that looks exactly like my rose's structure and everything. But mine is definitely pinky/purpley, not straight up red. Actually, it's last year's blooms didn't get as much sun as this year's, and since I've been shaping it to open it up and make it wider, this year it's gotten more overall sun and it's even more purpley/pink. It reminds me of a lot of Eva, and I saw a gallica in a book I just bought about roses that really resembles it as well, Belle Sultane, but that one is quite more purple than mine, plus mine blooms way more. Is there any sort of service that can be found that can test for whatever lineages?

Will rinsing tomatoes prolong storage?

Thanks everyone. Last week, I picked a bunch of tomatoes right before I went away for a few days. Half I rinsed and let dry; the rest I didn't rinse, only because I ran out of time. I put them all in the basement before I left. The results of my (very unscientific, n=1) experiment showed that rinsing them with water and allowing to dry does seem to help delay the onset of rot and spots. When I returned, every single tomato of the batch I didn't wash had a spot or two or three. The washed ones, only one or two tomatoes had a spot. And it was not related to cracks, bc even tomatoes without cracks got spots. I like the idea of a fan. And I guess this means tomatoes are not like eggs (eggs are laid with a natural anti-bacterial bloom that is removed during washing). It seems that rinsing tomatoes maybe decreases residual spores from the field that can then grow during storage. Maybe. Overall though, none of them seem to be holding up for very long this year. It's making for a less-fun canning experience and a lot of waste.

There is no evidence to support the notion that removing stamens will increase flower life, not even with cut lilies. Removal of the stamens/pollen holders is done for cosmetic reasons - to prevent the pollen from staining the flowers or from staining any other surface it may come into contact with. Lily pollen is pretty much indelible once it stains fabric or even skin.

And removing the stamens or pollen holders will not affect the plant adversely. Like disbudding or removing the sexual organs of any plant, it just prevents the plant's energy from being directed to seed production, which with bulbs certainly is not a bad thing.

Florists remove it because it stains the flower and fabric.
