removing stamens to prolong blooming

I have been removing the stamens from my Casablanca trumpet lily blooms as soon as it's possible to do so.

This does indeed prolong the blooming period--however, I am wondering if there is any evidence that doing this has a detrimental effect on the plant itself.

Does anyone know?

Wow...never thought of this. It really works? I have noticed that the stamens are removed on florist lilies, but thought that was done to keep pollen from dusting the blooms. I assume this can be done to any type, not just orientals?

Deadheading waterlilies will prolong the bloom as with most other repeat blooming plants. You can make or buy a pruner to remove spent blooms and pads in deep water. There are several to buy on the site I've linked to. Here is a link that might be useful: Koi Village

Russ, Most all doubles are sterile. But it is quite common to find pollen along the edge of some of the petals, check all of your flowers, you may find some. And some doubles like Dancing Queen, and many others, do have filaments with pollen on misshapen filaments.I think it's called petaloid stamens when they are sort of fused to the side of the petals. Doubles are almost always female sterile. Your flower is very clean and beautiful, some people think the distorted reproductive parts make the flower look messy. Check all your flowers and you may luck out and find a dab of pollen that you can manually put on your red flower. Good Luck, and would your double be 'Promise'?? Since you've been removing the spent flowers, I guess that you won't have any of the fabulous seed pods to use in your arrangements. That's the main reason that I grow Nigella. The flowers sure are a delight, though. You're asking the impossible....slow down and preserve flowering for one batch......speed up growth and flowering in the other. I'd be ultra conservative with the fertilization of the first batch. You probably know that already. I hope that your whole family has a truly wonderful day. Don't stress out over the flowers, you don't have much control over mother nature......or chickens, lol. When I was just starting out in my profession after graduating, the VP of the posh resort where I was working would always insist that I tell him, months in advance, what weekend the massive plantings of azaleas would be at their peak. They always had a flurry of activities to plan around the beautiful backdrop of the spring flowering shrubs. Ha! That guy was a real barrel of fun, lol.

Actually, I would think that it might do the opposite, making the flower last longer if you removed all the pollen! I quite often do this if I have serious plans to hybridize, I actually pick them out before they open so there is no chance of selfing getting in the way. And of course if the pollinations do take, then the flowers will whither faster than usual anyway so I don't really know for sure if just removing the pollen lengthens the life of the flowers. I'm sure that someone better informed than me would know for sure. As for shriveling scapes before the seedpods are ripe, it happens all the time to the best of us!! I have one currently on Magical Touch that I had to cut off with two half formed pods. Sometimes if the seedpods are far enough along you can stick the pedicels in water and hope for the best,... that some of the seeds with ripen. Never works for me but it can be done I think. Donna

There is no evidence to support the notion that removing stamens will increase flower life, not even with cut lilies. Removal of the stamens/pollen holders is done for cosmetic reasons - to prevent the pollen from staining the flowers or from staining any other surface it may come into contact with. Lily pollen is pretty much indelible once it stains fabric or even skin.

And removing the stamens or pollen holders will not affect the plant adversely. Like disbudding or removing the sexual organs of any plant, it just prevents the plant's energy from being directed to seed production, which with bulbs certainly is not a bad thing.

Florists remove it because it stains the flower and fabric.

Do not enjoy getting a phone call from an angry lady with ruined tablecloth....
