Removal of healthy leaves from climbing beans???

Question not for me, but a neighbour has climbing beans. Growing on pieces of twine that go from the ground to a vertical pole 7-feet off the ground. To me, the vines looked excellent and healthy, lush with leaves. My understanding is that all of these lush leaves would produce the photosynthesis needed to grow large and healthy beans. My neighbour did not agree, she thought the plants were too leafy, and she quite aggressively thinned the foliage. Is there any good reason to thin the foliage in this manner, or will full, healthy leaves help the plant mature the beans?
