i. Lactea Blooming 11/12/07

While doing some mulching today in 80o weather, I saw something blue at the base of some i. lactea clumps I started from Signa seeds several years ago. On closer observation, the clump was full of two inch blooms about two inches from the base. The standards are darker than the falls and are almost solid lavender. The falls are white veined lighter lavender. The blooms have a pleasant fragrance.

I checked this out on the species site and found that this species reblooms elsewhere on two inch stalks. It blooms much taller in the spring. This is the only beardless species iris I have ever had to bloom so late in the year. The clumps have not been affected by temps. down to 32o with frost because they are close to the house. The radiation of the brick of the house has prevented frost from forming for about ten feet away from the house and several bedding type plants such as periwinkle and celosia are in bloom from seed dropped from summer blooms.
