Our gardening guru recommends 1 part liquid detergent in 40 parts water. Spray thoroughly, make sure to cover undersides of leaves too. Wait 10 minutes, rinse with clear water. Repeat 3 times over 10 day period to get hatching eggs. This works like a charm, even on big ugly tomato worms. For the veggie garden, I actually use my hose end sprayer filled with liquid detergent and as soon as I've finished spraying, begin rinsing where I started. It works out to about 10 minutes all round. If I spray before actually seeing tomato worms, often there are hardly any later on. It's excellent for aphids but you really have to do the repeat spraying for it to work. This is all I ever use in the garden for spray. This year I tried using wood ash for my squash beetles and it worked fairly well, at least kept the bugs down long enough for the plants to get going. It's either the nymph of the leaf footed bug, or the nymph of one of the assassin bugs. The former is a pest, while the others are predators. If the image were a bit closer, I could probably ID it for certain. Try to observe the critters to see what they are more interested in: your tomatoes or other insects. Either way, they stab their food source, inject digestive juices, and suck the 'innards' out.

Last year, I had a tremendous aphid infestation as soon as I moved into a new house and set up the garden. For weeks, I was fighting it with every available method out there and I was baffled as to how they were back on my plants each following day! finally after many weeks of playing the soap spray game, I finally discovered the real problem.... It wasnt ants.... It was another neighboring landscape plant. In this case it was a Lupine bush. Ive never seen such an insane aphid infestation. There were millions of them, maybe hundreds of millions!!! no kidding. So I moved into quarantine and removal mode. cut the plant down, while i did aphids were literally raining down on my head! any shake to the plant and thousands of them would fall off so as im cutting the thing, aphids and their dooky were falling all over me. . I mean this was insane, i was at war and I was not about to lose this one. I pulled the giant greenwaste container out to the location of the plant and tried to stuff it in there with as many of the buggers still on the plant as possible. I had to jump on the thing to push the plant down and aphids were falling everywhere!!!! But mostly contained to the location of the plant. I managed to get the whole thing in there barely, then I took the greenwaste container to the street and left the cover on all the way. They took the container the next day and the majority of the problem was gone immediately. Next I moved into spray mode and sprayed down the whole yard with soap for the next 3-5 days. on the location of the infected plant i used the nuclear toxic stuff. problem gone. now its just normal maintenance. I have some that find their way into my greenhouse when the doors are open, quick soap spray 2 days in a row and theyre gone.

Jean, I am almost certain that insecticidal soap will not work because I even tried hornet and wasp spray (the one that kills on contact) and it did nothing. That stuff is much stronger than insecticidal soap! I don't think I can vacuum them because I doubt my dad will let me use any of his shop vacs for that and also, it will make the house stink like stinkbugs whenever I use the shop vac in the house from then on, even after emptying it. I read an article where vacuuming them was mentioned and it wasn't suggested for that very reason. Agardenstateofmind, my killing every one of them I can get to outside may not make much of a dent but it does make me feel better! Too bad people won't organize a stinkbug killing program and maybe we'd be less one invasive pest. Maybe I can try using a grill lighter to kill them in a safe and controlled way. It isn't "nice" but I care more about my native species and environment than I do for this alien species.
