Molly Frazier White Cutshort beans

Hello,

I just planted these heirloom beans. Can anyone describe them? Since I'm most familiar with Blue Lake bush beans, can you compare the difference in taste? What about the plant size? Will the individual plants be about the same height as Blue Lakes? .......

Here's a description from the Seed Savers Exchange 2008 Winter Yearbook:

"Never grew a more productive bean. Has a string like old-time beans, exquisite flavor, must pick daily in the heat of the growing season, seed susceptible to virus."

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds says it's an Ozark Heirloom and, being in MO, mentions that it is grown by a local family. They also say it has short vines. Blue Lake is a tall vine. So, if this one is short, I'd guess it won't be as tall!

My guess is that this bean will be more "beany" than Blue Lake. Our favorite bean is probably similar, being a cutshort. I like to pick the pods when the seeds are bulging and the strings are heavy and easy to remove.

I like the description you read from Seed Saver's Exchange about the flavor. I only bought a small packet of seed (57 seeds), but if they mainly all germinate, we might have a nice stand and we think late in the season beans have a slightly nicer flavor.

Besides Southern Exposure and Baker Creek as possible bean sources the SSE Yearbook is treasure trove of all kinds of beans, bush and pole. But one needs to be an SSE member to request varieties from other members. However, Glenn Drowns at Sand Hill Preservation, online, offers many pole bean varieties that are from the Yearbook since he's an SSE member and also Curator for Cucurbits for SSE, and you might take a look at that site as well. We grew October beans (speckled cranberry?) for the first time this year--they are beautiful! I am not sure how to cook them! Do you have recipes? I am going out now to pick some and leave some for vine drying. You are welcome to some of them--we grew them in an "almost organic" fashion--this is the 3rd year of not using chemicals, just compost and cow manure, no pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Let me know if you'd like some.

Howdy! Greasy Cutshort could be similar. Most cutshorts, however, actually have their seeds more closely packed in the pod than does Tennessee Cutshort. Take a gander at Sustainable Mountain Agriculture's greasy beans. They post pictures. We really like Greasy beans, though they are not part of our own family's heritage. I grow Long Cut Old Timey Greasy, which is a mixture of greasy beans from near Asheville , NC. Some are "greasier" (read "shinier") than others, but every bean in that mixture is a good one. Greasy beans, like so many Appalachian heirlooms, are tender podded with strings. They can be strung and enjoyed when a normal snap bean would be too tough. The ones I've tried are all good ALL PURPOSE beans. They are excellent snaps. They're easy to shell for shell beans, and they produce a LOT of dry seed. I did discover, however, that Long Cut Old Timey Greasy is quite promiscuous. It crosses very easily with other beans. I actually had a "Tennessee Cutshort Greasy" crop up last summer. I set the seed aside and now can't find it. But I made a mental note to plant this mix far away from my other beans. Very interested in trying out this in North Texas. Most season's my pole bean success is less but someone suggested this to get a good yield in my zone. Would anyone have seeds for this to trade? thanks!

I looked around and didn't find anyone offering this one, presently. If you can believe it, someone had offered it on Amazon. You could keep checking for Baker Creek or the Seed Savers Exchange to offer it again.

Also, we grow Tennessee Cutshort, which is fairly heat tolerant. (Does well for us in Oklahoma). I know that Sandhill Preservation Center has Tennessee Cutshort.

Another very good bean for hotter climates, though not a stringed (tenderpodded) bean, is Rattlesnake.
