When do pole beans start climbing?
Comments (10)My Blue lakes were planted the Fri. before Easter. I needed a taller trellis since they have outgrown it! They attached to the rope trellis when they first started running. I leaned my rake against the trellis the other day and forgot to put it up. I went out 2 days later and had to unwind the beans wrapping around it! I'm going by the big box store to pick up some 2x2x8's on my way home. I'm going to use wire ties and tie them to the T-posts so that I can extend them. Might not be as pretty, but hopefully it will work. Note to self, buy longer T-posts for next year!...See MoreThe science of bean vines
Comments (4)Alisande, what a great post. This answers so many questions, especially what to do when the vines keep moving upwards. Now I know to turn the vine down on itself. I'm so glad you e-mailed this man. This should be filed in a classic section. Thanks so much!!!...See MoreWill pole beans grow on trellis?
Comments (11)Pole beans will do well on a trellis, that's the only way I grow them. They will twine around almost any vertical support, including fencing; but some varieties don't seem to like artificial supports, such as plastic or galvanized metal. Rusted metal (such as old fencing, or concrete remesh) works great. Most of my trellises are strings run horizontally between fence poles, with vertical strings run between top & bottom bars. The verticals wrap around the horizontals on the way down. Takes some time to tie them each year, but I can build them in any length, and don't need to worry about storing lengths of fencing. Baler twine is cheap but strong, and you can just burn it vines & all at year's end. Ditto Anney's comment on "Fortex". It acts like a cowpea, until it gets up a ways, sending out long runners almost horizontally. My favorite pole snap bean, but requires some training initially....See MorePole bean climbing
Comments (10)Arlen, I am also growing the scarlet runners as perennials, however this will be my first year. I will do what I do with all my other perennial crops, prune it drastically, keep watering it but otherwise ignore it until it comes back in the spring. I plan on keeping seed and sending it to some folks in the Bay Area, I think San Francisco would have and ideal climate for runner beans, always cool or mild, but never cold or hot. So I have been pondering this question, and I went out and checked how my pole beans were climbing. Al the P. vulgaris are climbing counter clock wise. That would be Garafal oro, Kentucky wonder, Purple peacock. The scarlet runner is also climbing counter clock wise. The pole limas (P lunatus) is also climbing counter clock wise (all these are bird's eye view). I have Carolina limas and Christmas limas planted so far. I also have a pole cow pea (yard long), that is yet another species, but it still has not figured out how to climb. I think they are too cold, hopefully it will warm up soon. I suspect it will be the same though.......See Moretcstoehr
