Will any of the iris I plant now will bloom next spring?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to growing iris, and have a few dozen rhizomes I've ordered that will be planted this week. I'm sure they won't all bloom, but is there any chance that I may see some of them flower next spring?

Well ......................... I'll put it this way. If you get no bloom at all, order elsewhere.
If you get 50% bloom, hooray. If greater than that share your source and your soil!

LOL...thanks, iris_gal! That sounds reasonable to me. :-) If I see 50% bloom this spring, I will be ecstatic, that's for sure. I appreciate your reply!

Bamboo stated: "The conventional wisdom is the earlier you prune the earlier your crop will be next spring." That makes sense but it also would make sense then if I don't prune at all then bloom should be even earlier. I can hold my plants all summer with little new growth, I think. Probably those commercial growers figure they have to prune at some point and as soon as possible after harvest is their best option. I have less leaf disease than you, way less. But the leaves that grew early this spring don't make it through next winter like ones I could force by pruning now. So forcing new shoots now and maintaining high nitrogen will hold more leaves through winter. That evergreen system may have some advantages like more leaf area sooner in spring. I'm still only just past half way on harvest. It was cold at night all spring which affects even greenhouse plants. After thinking this through I probably need to go out right now and at least do some pruning on those plants done harvest. Wow, 72 fig varieties! There should be some good ones! The roots will continue to grow in cold temperatures. As a matter of fact, fall and winter planting is recommended over summer or spring, in most climates. Certainly yours. Remember, too, that the temperature of the soil is going to stay a lot warmer for a much longer time than the surrounding air. As far as cutting the top off...NO NO NO! That is something that should never be done to compensate for root loss or prior to transplanting. It is absolutely counter productive for the plant. Not only will you eliminate the energy factories for making all those new roots by removing the leaves, but the plant will misinterpret your actions entirely! To a plant, pruning is a growth stimulating process. If you prune the top, the plant will redirect much of its resources back into foliage replacement at the expense of root regeneration. Another thing that could work against the tree is fertilization at this time. Again, that is a top growth stimulating action, which is just what the tree does not need at this time. What you should do now is direct frequent watering to your new transplant, especially right to where that little pitiful root ball is. Hopefully, the root pruning will help stimulate some good growth below ground. We hope that the soil in the greenhouse is porous, not overly compacted and all of that good stuff. Keep us posted on the progress of your plant!

Honestly, I have never thought iris leaves are that all fire attractive but the blooms sure do make up for it. Here the iris leaves look pretty good, green like they are in spring as long as they get some water. I don't want to do annuals as anything and everything spreads or sprawls and I don't want to cover those rhizomes when they are putting on the new growth. Spring bulbs just seem to be logical to me as they bloom, follige only stays for awhile and then it all just dissapears. Late spring or summer you would never know those bulbs had been there. I figgure the dying spring bulb folliage is only ratty looking for a short while. The thing I am thinking is to select the right bulbs or combo of bulbs. I was thinking about it. I was thinking between the each iris in the iris rows afew dutch iris. The bulbs are small, like onion sets. They don't get planted too deeply. About 4-6 inches. And everyone said they die out after afew years up here in the north. As I have never had them fall planted I don't know how long they will actually last for me. But they are also really easy to pull up if they crowd the iris. Then between the rows tulips, maybe daffs, maybe both. But only afew in each grouping so there are not big clumps. I am still working this out in my mind.

From my personal experience only, a few years ago I moved one of my rows of iris in early spring, just after they started putting out some new growth. I dug deep and took as much dirt as I could get with each iris I moved. It looked like I all of the roots, and figured they would be just fine. Not one of them bloomed that year. Shadow

Welcome to the iris forum. I agree that you should expect at least 50% bloom next Spring, if you plant them where they will get at least 6 hours sun. Where in Georgia are you? I'm in Warm Springs and have over 2000 (500 plus different). There are several iris clubs in Georgia - we would love having you in one of them. Marvin E.

Hi there,

I am about to plant the 19 rhizomes I ordered from Cooley's website and I have been wondering to myself about the success as well. I live in Washington DC so I have good old clay soil, which I amend with Bumper Crop anytime I plant something new. The website sells a "Spring and Fall combo" of fertilizers---one to apply in each season---but I am puzzled: NEITHER has the formulation which the planting instructions from the bulb shipment suggests to use! Should I assume that the ones they sell are sufficient, or should I also buy another (Anderson's is the only brand I can find with that specific nitrogen count)?

When I moved to my new location last year, I moved my entire Iris collection with me. Because I couldn't plant them all the way, I had everything, plus new acquistitions, growing in pots. I tried Walter Moores' potting method, which can be found on the web, and it works wonders.

Even though I only was able to put half of my irises into the ground. The results were phenomenal. Now it could be because my "new ground" has more nutrients than the soil at my old house, but highly doubt it. I had about 85% of the planted Irises bloom this spring, thus giving me my best Iris season ever. I highly suggest you try out his technique.
