light meter readings

Hello All

I have done so much reading on this site about footcandles in relation to plant light needs and was never sure what strength of light my windows were providing to my plants. I've done the hand test and not being completely satisfied I broke down and bought a sylvania digital light meter. I just got it in the mail today and ran to nearly every window to check my readings. I was surprised to find at 3pm on a mostly sunny/clear day nearly all my windows were putting out less than 200 footcandles. I have huge floor to ceiling windows (not double paned) and would think they would be getting more light than this. I also have a mini phal orchid at my desk under a 13watt 6500K daylight CFL and the reading 7 inches from the light was only 500 fc. Is something wrong with me light meter or does this sound about right? I have ficus, dracaena and several phalaenopsis orchids so I need to be getting atleast around 1000 fc for them.

Thanks

Curtis
