half runner beans-seed halves stay in ground

I read earlier on this forum that half runner beans emerge from the ground with the seed halves still underground. Neither of mine did that so do I not have half runners? Striped bunch and NT half runner. thanks.

Half-runners are Phaseolus vulgaris, or common bush beans that get bigger than other bush beans and send out tendrils. It's as if half-runners are incompletely dwarfed from pole to bush habit.

Runner beans are another species, Phaseolus coccineus

George that is interesting and I just observed it saturday while putting down hay on the beans. It was not the Test trio but another bean I planted. I am working tonight but will check on it in the morning if it still is growing I'll get a picture Here is a picture of the test beans minus Ruth Bible. Ruth Bible I had already set out. The Childers is on the left, Tenn. cutshort in the middle and Some black greasy bean I thought I would grow on the right. Pole Bean Tepee and seed spacing

There are many ways to trellis pole beans. Just keep in mind that they can grow taller than six feet and that they will be bushier at the top than at the bottom. What you describe will no doubt work. The vines will grow off the tops of the tepees then flop over (unless you prune them). I'm not sure if pruning will cause side branching. I haven't done it. There will be some crowding at the top where all the poles converge. I wouldn't expect any of this to result in serious problems, even if it isn't optimal. If you want a height of six feet, perhaps you should use eight foot poles to compensate for the slant, the overlap where they connect and for the part which will be stuck into the ground. Eight foot poles will probably make six foot tepees. I have been using eight foot poles stuck in the ground vertically on three foot spacing. I plant a circle of six seeds around the base of each pole. I'm planning to try a different scheme this year. Remember that, when the vines and foliage are fully grown, they offer a lot of wind resistance. If they aren't well anchored, the will get blown over. Jim

I grew Painted Lady Improved from SSE last year. I didn't eat any of them as snaps because at the time I didn't know they were edible. I was growing them as an ornamental on my garden fence. I did decide to try them as dried beans. This recipe works well for them... I soak them overnight, cook them in a pressure cooker for 20 min with water only, no salt. Cook brown rice while the beans are cooking. When all are cooked, I put some rice and beans in a bowl, add ghee( or butter, or Smart Balance), salt, turmeric, ground red pepper, and cumin seeds to taste (a pinch or so of each). I sometimes add chopped fresh or dried tomatoes. Heat in the microwave. Add chopped fresh cilantro and fresh lemon juice to taste. ENJOY!! I keep the beans and rice separate in the frig and mix up a bowl of this whenever I want. Quick, easy, healthy, and DELICIOUS! I use this recipe with any dried beans that hold their shape when cooked.

Same here, lotsa flowers, no beans last year till cooler weather came. Then they went crazy and made so many beans, I still have over a full quart jar of the dried beans! A few of the beans that fell to the ground wintered over and came up this spring. I was kinda surprised about that! But if you dry them, be sure to give them a LONG time to dry. I tried cooking some and I thought they were just OK. I mean, if I was really, really hungry I'd eat the cooked dried bean. DH is annoyingly picky about food and he ate a little bitty bowl and then didn't eat any more. So I had the rest of the pot to do something with and I didn't want to eat them every day for a week. So I poured off the liquid and saved it to add to soup, then pureed the beans in the Cuisinart, added chili seasoning, cooked ground beef, onion and green pepper and rolled them up in flour tortillas. Poured chili sauce over all and topped with sharp cheddar cheese and baked. LOL, DH had two helpings. I haven't tried 'em as green beans because I was a little put off by how hairy the pods were. I have Insuk's planted this year and they are blooming profusely. BTW, is there a difference, tastewise, between Insuks and Scarlet Runner? They look the same to me. --Ilene

To more directly answer your question, you may have heard that runner beans, not half runners, emerge with the first true leaves, leaving the seed halves, or cotyledons, underground. This is true of Phaseolus coccineus.

Half runners, however, are Phaseolus vulgaris and will emerge the cotyledons first. So even if the cotyledons came up, you may have half runners. Plan for a big bush that will send up tendrils to 3 feet long. You can try to train them on a short trellis if you want.

ok, thanks for the info. So I guess they will cross with other bush beans but will they cross with pole beans?

Technically, they will cross with any P. vulgaris. In real time, P.vulgaris is pretty self contained and cross pollination is very low.

The original wild state for P vulgaris is a pole habit. Bush beans are dwarfed P. vulgaris, developed for mechanical harvesting. Dwarfed or bush runner beans, P. coccineus, have also been developed.

"Runner" bean does not mean pole, it is a European name applied to P. coccineus.

Like Farmerdill said, P. vulgaris are unlikely to cross much. P. coccineus are said to be more likely to cross with one another, which is why I am hesitant to grow more than one runner bean per year.

Just a small point. 'Runner bean' is just the British name. All the multitudinous languages of Europe have their own names in their own languages.
