UPDATE: I just received confirmation that this is a Carrotwood tree, it is considered a Non-Native invasive plant here in South Florida. I will need to take it down as it is on our the Prohibited Plant list for Palm Beach county. From what I have been reading, there is no confirmation that the seeds are poisonous.

The two common hibiscus that are hardy in my area (hibiscus syriacus and the hybrid hardy hibiscus plants) have seed pods that are significantly thinner and more paper-like. Despite being reasonably soft, these pods were thicker than those. Hibiscus seed pods are also more pointy, even star-shaped as they age and start to open up. These are brown and dried and still sealed. I don't think there is another shrub-size hibiscus in my area, other than hibiscus syriacus, is there?
