Moving Siberian Irises

All of the Siberians that I moved last year did not bloom this year. Is it a question of just "settling in" or is it possible to plant too deep like a bearded iris?

I'm going to guess it's settling in. Especially if roots were exposed rather than a large dirt mass being moved.

Hi Debbie, I don't worry to much about planting sibs to deep. I suppose it could be possible. However, I have had a few that quit blooming the last couple of years and I have also divided them. They still haven't bloomed, and this is the second year for them. I am thinking it may be our weather, since it seems to be changing from year to year. For me this year it is hot and dry here. Last year we had storm after storm with hail and winds. I am just leaving mine as I am redoing my garden in the next couple of years so they will be moved to fresh well ammended soil. Maybe that will kick start them back into blooming. For me it is just a couple that is doing this....the rest are blooming fine.

Maybe add a little compost or composted manure next spring and make sure they are getting enough water. See if that helps....if not well.....I guess shovel prune and try another variety.

Pat, yes we do have visiting deer. One summer day last year I was working in our sunken garden. I was bending over deadheading daylilies and pulling off a few yellowing leaves. When I stood up I was literally eyeball to nose with a big buck. He had only one antler-the other was a stub where it had apparently broken off. The idea of deer doesn't scare me, but I wasn't prepared to be up close and personal with this guy. He was really big and I initially was in a state of panic until he decided that I wasn't particularly interesting and just moved along down the road. In April last year I had just started documenting my garden with the camera. As I was focusing the camera on the island bed in our front lawn these two were passing through the lens.

I had read that they can still do OK in the same conditions as bearded iris, they just won't flourish as much..but I guess that isn't exactly true! Speaking of growing irises in shade, a couple years ago I divided and threw out some of this dwarf purple iris that I have, because it had a ton of leaf spot that I couldn't get rid of and it looked terrible. I tossed the worst plants under an evergreen near our house. The last 2 springs I have noticed that those plants have managed to root - with their rhizomes completely out of the ground - under the conifer branches. Their leaf spot has 100% disappeared, and they have bloomed happily each year. Weird! Who knew iris can survive in full shade, in a bunch of pine needles, with their rhizomes completely unburied! Silly plants.

I have purple Siberian Iris which come through and bloom in amongst Tamora David Austin roses... I meant to get a picture, but did not. It was beautiful!!!

In fall. The "rule of thumb" for division of perennials is early blooming ones divide in fall - late blooming ones divide in spring. Less chance of inhibiting the bloom cycle with this method. Siberian iris do not have a root system that is sensitive to the timing of division (like beardeds or PC iris do) so I've found it best to follow this method. Your climate may be a factor, though, if fall planting not advocated in your area.
