That's the first I've heard about the Comet powder. I'm definitely going to take note of that. It's a shame the rotting one has to be thrown out. I'm guessing there is no way to save the "toes" or any rhizomes connected to the rotted parent? I'm really hoping it isn't voles or moles attacking my iris. I'm almost tempted to put out a couple of traps and see what happens... I just don't want to catch a stray cat or squirrel. I've read something somewhere about hardware cloth to keep animal pests out of pots and whatnot. Could that be wrapped loosely around the rhizomes to deter them? I'm sorry to hear about your loss, cecily. We have heavy clay soil too and it's been a constant fight to grow anything like bulbs, rhizomes, or tubers. Ours is a pain to work with. It gets so... cakey and dense when moist. The recent week of rain only made things worse (and right after I started a new lawn in the backyard!). I've definitely learned the importance of raised beds this year. I didn't think about relocating away from bushes. They're planted near azaleas, and I have noticed odd tunneling in the soil around those. I'm going to take your suggestion and move them away from anyting that might act as a haven for the pests. Thanks! A friend has one of those devices that gives off a high pitched buzz and it seemed to work until he stopped (and the moles came back with a vengeance). I got one a couple days ago and will give it a try, and should it not work, I'll definitely give the Mole & Vole Stopper a try. Thank you for the advice! Good morning everyone! Aaahhhh Louie! Where can I begin? Since his arrival he has knocked over just about everything. Eaten 1 of our snakes (now, I can't confirm he killed it, but I did see him munching on it yesterday...can I say eeeewwwwww) And, he has single handedly mowed down almost all the flowers of my floating hearts. I did see him taking down my water celery last night. I want to be upset with him, but, I just can't. He's so little. Maybe a foot long. I told the kids he's like having another toddler running around. You just have to fix everything after he's finished with it. Bunzy (our paint turtle) and her two new paint turtle friends who showed up a few weeks ago, Bubba and Penelope (the kids named them, lol) all seem to be getting along just fine with each other. They were the only one's I was worried about. I'm going to try to get some pictures of him tonight. Last night I was feeding the fish and watching the turtles come up and eat the food. I was to zoned in on watching them that I started to get that weird feeling like I was being watched. I turn my head and there is LOUIE about 2 feet away from my feet munching away in the water. He is NOT afraid of people, lol! Sheri, LOL,I have no clue where he came from? We are close to the Seneca River. I say close, maybe a mile away, and our neighbors have ponds in their pastures. I don't know?? I can't imagine something so little traveling so far? Shirley, our "flying dinosaurs" have been making their nightly appearance as well. The herons aren't afraid of us either! The kids run at them yelling, they just walk to the other side of the pond. I put a couple of shepherds hooks down there with garden flags thinking moving things blowing around might scare them...nope. Hubby got me 2 beautiful heron statues last year for Christmas to scare them away. They stand right next to them, lol. The iris' did have a great spring! I did have some problems with rot afterward. I don't know if it was the crazy cold we had or what? I have a few die off completely. :( The ones that survived are multiplying like crazy. Your daylilies are so gorgeous! How large is Big Bird? To the original poster: Asking neighbors for a friendly warning before spraying sounds like a good idea. Covering your plants *well* would help to a certain extent, though you might have to leave the covers on for 24 hours or more. Another option to consider is delaying your average plant-out date, this gives the neighbors time to spray their lawns (as it did mine). The bonus is that you avoid most of May's unpredictable weather and plant growth will take off in soil that is warm 24/7. Another idea for next year, plant a few extra seeds of your rarer, most special plants as backups. Keep them safe and in a different area (under lights for a longer time?). If herbicide damage happens again, you'll have quick replacements. Personally i would avoid the confrontational, accusational or guilt trip route. Keep up good neighborly relations because spraying herbicide to kill weeds and errant grasses is fully a homeowner's right. There's so much literature that advises doing it, that most people think it's the right thing to do, you may never convince them otherwise. By the looks of it, some of your plants may recover, it will set back some of your production though. Hi everyone, Well, I am double posting this in 2 forums - I hope nobody minds. As promised, here I am posting about what in the world I've been doing all summer while traveling to & fro Wisconsin. As some of you already know, I work with fish-eating birds: cormorants, pelicans, herons, egrets, gulls, wood storks, etc. My husband and I have been working in Wisconsin for the past 3 years, but we also regularly work in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Ontario, and a few other places. Yes, we are a husband + wife team, working together out of the same office. Many people are surprised that we work together, but it is great. We make a fantastic team, and are often at our best under challenging field conditions. Great minds think alike, and being dear friends & in love sure helps too. (ok, enough with the mushy stuff). So now for a few photos from the vegetation surveys we did this month. Background: We are working on remote islands in Lake Michigan, around the Door Co. Peninsula area. All the islands have nesting double-crested cormorants and herring gulls. Some also have nesting Am. white pelicans and Canada geese. Back in April, we put up some 6 ft x 6 ft pens (we call them exclosures) to exclude the cormorants because they damage vegetation with their nesting activities (too much POOP!). So then we went back in August to catalog everything that grew in the pens, by plant species, and weighed it to also determine biomass. That meant breaking out the field guides, studying up on botany and the flora of Wisconsin, and bringing the plant presses for species we couldn't identify on the island. We compareed the exclosure plots to some "control" plots, which had nothing but 4 wooden stakes at the corners. We had 45 plots to do on 3 islands, plus another 3 islands down by the city of Green Bay that we did simple vegetation surveys on (no pens). It was alot of work, but very interesting. The bottom line: there are lots of nonnative species on those islands, like motherwort, catnip, pigweed, common mallow, stinging nettle and sow thistle. The native vegetation was primarily lambsquarter and smartweed species. Almost done clipping this 1-meter plot: Looking for small plants beneath the lambsquarter The finished, sampled 1-meter subplot Who would even know what this was?!?! I saved seeds to winter sow and see if I can't figure it out. The very last veg plot to measure. You can tell, because we look so happy! A friend found crawling across the plant press The stinging nettle I hacked through to make us a nice trail to get to the center of the island. At least its not poison ivy! Ok, that's all for now.
