How long to leave lights on seedlings every 24 hours?
Comments (17)PM & JAG, we are perhaps not as far apart as you seem to think... maybe you should re-read my post? If you get beyond the "leggy" part, you will find that I was referring to the effect of _temperature_ in combination with long days... and yes, with fluorescent lighting, which is widely used (including by me). It is the only feasible means by which I can light enough shelf space to start 400-500 seedlings. Granted, "floros" are not ideal... but not everyone can afford high-intensity lighting. At the scale on which I garden, it's cost-prohibitive. We are also in agreement that long light periods can - and should - be used for starting plants later than the recommended dates, because of the increased growth rate. I did say (if you re-read) that increased growth was a problem "...Unless you plan for this...". For those reading this who are accustomed to starting their plants on a particular date, they need to know that with long light periods, those dates might require some adjustment... or they could end up with plants larger than they planned for. I say this from experience, having made that mistake when I was still a newbe to seed starting. If your plants are too large for the lights & it's still too early to transplant, that could be a problem. Forewarned is forearmed. The recommendations I gave for cooler temps & air movement will contribute to stockier growth, and are accepted greenhouse practice. Perhaps for purposes of this discussion, the questions should be: - the definition of "ample light" - the optimal size for transplants...See MoreLights on 24/7-problem?
Comments (14)Title: Treatments of fluctuating temperature under continuous light enabled the production of quality transplants of tomato, eggplant and sweet pepper Authors: Omura, Y.; Oshima, Y.; Kubota, C.; Kozai, T. Authors affiliation: Chiba Univ., Matsudo, Chiba, 271-8510, Japan. Published in: Hortscience, volumn 36, pages 586-587, (2001). Abstract: "In transplant production under artificial lighting conditions, continuous lighting is desired to achieve high production efficiency while potentially reducing costs. However, such physiological disorders as chlorosis and necrosis on leaves are often observed under continuous light. Tomato (cv. Momotaro), eggplant (cv. Senryonigo), and sweet pepper (cv. Kyomidori) seedlings were grown for 14 days either under a 12-h photoperiod with a photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) of 300 mumolcntdotm-2cntdots-1 at 24/24 degreeC (temperature in photo-/dark period), or under a 24-h photoperiod (continuous light) with a PPF of 150 mumolcntdotm-2cntdots-1 under one of three temperature regimes: 24/24 degreeC, 28/20 degreeC and 32/16 degreeC (temperature in the former (12 h)/latter half (12 h) of each day). The average temperature was 24 degreeC and daily integrated PPF was 13.0 molcntdotm-2 for all treatments. The dry masses of tomato, eggplant, and sweet pepper seedlings under a 24-h photoperiod were 1.1, 1.5, and 1.6 times, respectively, greater than that under a 12-h photoperiod at 24/24 degreeC. Chlorosis was observed on leaves under a 24-h photoperiod for tomato at 24/24 degreeC and eggplant at 24/24 degreeC, and 28/20 degreeC; but, it was not observed for tomato at 28/20 degreeC and 32/16 degreeC, and eggplant at 32/16 degreeC. For all three species, the stems of the seedlings were shorter on day 14 and the seedlings set the first flower at lower nodal positions when grown under a greater diurnal range of air temperature in the 24-h photoperiod. Fluctuating the air temperature under continuous lighting enables the production of tomato, eggplant and sweet pepper transplants of quality (i.e., having accelerated growth and early flowering) without causing undesirable chlorosis on leaves." --------------------------------------...See MoreLights on 24/7
Comments (8)My rose cuttings are on 24/7. The growth is phenomenal, don't believe when people say the plant grows when it's dark. I can see it growing from when I check in the morning, and when I come back from work, to when I get up the next day. Everything is growing great, stem, leaves, roots and flowers. Some plants need a COOLING OFF TIME, if the temp is a little high, and some studies show that fluctuating the temperature is of benefit, and the same studies show maximum growth occurs on 24/7. I can't find Henry Kuska's post on the subject, but he did confirm this, and as you all should know, he is a seriously experienced grower. You might be able to find his post by searching under his name in this forum. Paul Mozarowski....See MoreSS Support ~~Mon 7/17 thru Sun 7/24
Comments (50)Besh! A happy belated birthday to you! I hope that you celebrate all weekend! Zig. I am cracking up about you and the DH's ideas on the perfect date! Donna, I have never had an "official" pedicure before. DD gave me a foot bath, a water filled foot massager with various attachments. I'll bet it was WONDERFUL! John, I hope you have a GREAT time camping and 'yakking. I'll be camping vicariously thru you and NH Suzanne. I am going to consider a solo camping trip as most of my friends are "camping weenies" and won't go. Please let us know how it goes. Raeanne, I'd like to be prepared to do both scenic touring AND white water kayaking. We have kayak demo days at the bay about 30 miles away. I have put different rigs in the water and tried a bunch of them out. What I haven't done is made up my mind.... :) I am also just "window shopping" right now. I will buy as a reward for a goal I have set for myself. Thanks to you and John for your yak stats. Oh! And CONGRATS on your loss! I am down 2# this week! I have had a rough few weeks here. I want to thank everybody here for standing by me and helping me out. I haven't gone into too much detail but I have really had to work on having a better attitude. I miss my DH. I also don't seem to "fit" in a lot of our old social circles as a single person. Even church feels a little awkward. I have called my mother in laws house several times just to hear his voice on her answering machine message.(he taped a message for her machine 2 yrs ago) Work has sucked... gotten blamed for other peoples incompetence and in my book, when we are talking patient care, this is unacceptable.I can't work like that. What I do, I feel, is a calling, not a job. Things have changed dramatically since I became an independent contractor. Still a lot of adjustments to be made. I have made a point of "fake it till you make it" and slowly but surely it has been working. I participated in the Cooking Forum swap and that certainly cheered me up. You guys are terrific. Thanks for all the emails and the phone call AND the accountablity. Don't stop now!! : ) Love, Tikanas...See Moremacheske
