Advice on fluorescent lights for the ignorant...

I was given a plant light unit - it has 4 shelves, each with a fluorescent light fixture that holds a pair of 24" bulbs. The bulbs in it are Sylvania GroLux T12. I was planning to replace them as I don't know their age, and I had heard that even if fluorescent lights work, you should replace them every year or so. So first, someone tell me if that's correct. I do have to replace some of the (what's the word - ballast? starter? the things that are FS-2).

Now, I went to HD and checked out lights - the "Plant and Aquarium" light bulbs (20w) are 8.50 each. That adds up if you are replacing eight of them. Are there cheaper alternatives or sources? I'm just starting common stuff - marigolds, zinnias, basil, tomatos, etc.

hi, i started marigolds,zinnas,petunia's and geraniums. they are doing very well under regular four foot shop lights, they germinated nicely and have been growing great, i have them in the basement where my furnace is and run a fan every so often. i try to keep it at least 70 degrees in there but i shut everything off at bedtime (12am) and turn the lights back on at (6am) and run the fan, i gets down to 65 at night but things are doing well, just some input growing under regular 40watt shop lights.

The FS-2 is a starter. You've probably found them already but they are cheap, should be less than a dollar each.

Fluorescent lights put out less light as they get older. Not enough less that you can really notice without comparing old and new side by side, but enough that many growers replace them every 5,000 hours or so. You don't have to but should be aware that you could be getting 20% less light from an old tube.

You can just use cool white tubes if you can find them in the size you need. One thing to remember is that cheaper fluorescent tubes tend to put out less light and burn out quicker. The biggest cost over the life of any fluorescent tube is the electricity so the cheapest tube is not always the cheapest tube!

Gro-Lux or Plant & Aquarium tubes are specialist items and you pay a premium. $8.50 is not a bad price for a plant/aquarium tube, I'm guessing it is a generic? Even a good quality cool white can cost more than that. The 24" tubes tend to cost more than the 48" ones (!) simply because they don't sell very many. You might be able to get them cheaper by the case online, or find the branded version for a similar price, but a quick look found the cheapest at $7.99, and you have to mess with shipping.

Yes - thank you, Mike. As an avid lurker on the gardenweb hoya forum, I always take your advice when I see you've already answered a question I needed answered, especially since we have similiar weather/indoor growing conditions. I didn't mean to hijack, but I came to the forum with the same exact question and thought it might be redundant to start a new thread for the same thing...I really am sorry. To answer your question, Mike I expanded my hoya collection in a major way this summer and had most growing outside. Now that I've had to bring them in for the winter I can only fit about 60-75 plants in windows and the rest have to be in the room we are now calling "The Greenhouse" under completely artificial lighting, plastic sheeting hanging over the shelves to keep in humidity and a fan. They all seem extremely happy so far and I love that room now. I'm glad to know that there is a chance for blooms under lights. I wasn't sure because Lacunosa is such an easy bloomer I thought it might have just been a freak occurance. We hope to have a REAL greenhouse in the near future and I can't wait! Although I sort of like being able to walk into the next room to see all of my plants without having to go outside...and now that I know they may bloom indoors I may not be in such a rush ;) What do you do with your plants in the winter, Mike? I'm not sure if I remember seeing a conversation about that...

I see I didn't answer part of the question. In a thirty gallon tank, use compact fluorescent bulbs because the tank is too small to mount long fluorescent tubes. Short fluorescent tubes are more expensive and not as efficient, you might not even be able to fit in enough to light the tank properly. Regular incadescent bulbs are no use, unless you feel like getting some 300W bulbs which will fry everything! Depending on the plants you will need between about 30W and 150W of compact fluorescents to light a thirty gallon tank. Again, make sure you mount them with a good reflector so that you are lighting the tank and not the ceiling :) Compact fluorescents are frequently available in "daylight" 6500K (maybe 5000K) and warm white 3000K colours, and sometimes in cool white 4100K. You can mix 6500K and 3000K successfully, or just go with 4100K or 6500K. Don't use just 3000K bulbs except for starting seeds. For growing under lights longterm or if you don't like the way the regular bulbs make your plants look washed out, then look for bulbs with a CRI of 90 or more, which might be called full spectrum. You'll probably only find these in the daylight 6500K colour. The regular spiral bulbs are fine, but also look out for straight tube bulbs, you can find ones that look like a fluorescent tube bent in half, maybe 12" long, they work very well for lighting a tank.

David, the law should have been written to encourage the purchase of the most efficient lighting, (IE they get the credit for now many watts the lights save, instead of the bassakwards law they wrote where you add up the watts of the non-incandescent lights you bought and gets a "Credit for that"----so that encourages people to buy those non-incandescants (at the highest wattage), so they can use an incandescent (as computed by our idiots)! If you live in Calif, there is NO WAY, you can miss all the windmills out here, and there are credits (US & Calif), I believe for purchasing Solar Power. Let me give you another example of why I call these "So Called Thinkers", idiots. My wife works for a huge company, with TONS of computers. Just about all the computers are still using Cathode Ray Tube Monitors (There not nearly as efficient as LCD Monitors). There is NO incentive for companies to update monitors (Government wise--Especially CAlif Govt). In fact , you are penalized if you update the monitor, first the sales tax, but worse than that is a law our "Idjusts" passed---The so called "Monitor Recycling Fee". If you are a business, in Calif, You have to "Guesstimate" the number of monitors you will buy in the calendar year. Then you pay a Fee based upon your number (of course they Keep an Eye on ya). This law was passed when (due to the Terminator), no new taxes would be passed in Calif---or at least it would be difficult "Political wise" So the Legislature came up with all kinds of "Fees", this being one of them. They kept coming up with new fees until the "Hammer Fell". Monitor's that are recycled, make money for the recycler so it had nothing to do with the disposal costs of old monitors! One of the many reasons the State is Broke, is because we duplicate so much of what the Fed Govt is already doing, and I for one, don't Appreciate Our Idiots "Granstanding" and passing laws that have the opposite effect of maximizing Energy Savings!!! Thanks for all the comments. They were very helpful, and I've since done some more researching and looking around. LED is very intriguing but so pricey right now. I do look forward to seeing how that technology develops, though, and expect to see more options and lower prices evolve over the next few years. If we were going to go with FL and stick with those forever, I would put in the 5" cans since I think they look better. However, right now it looks like LED fixtures can only be used with 6" cans, so to give us flexibility to convert to LED later, we'd need to put in 6" cans unless we wanted to take the gamble that they will come out with 5" LED fixtures at some point. I'm actually thinking now about going back just with a center 3-light flushmount fixture for my general room lighting and relying on UCL and task lighting over my peninsula to give me what I need functionally. I had thought perhaps pendants over the peninsula but now I'm wondering about just doing 3 LED cans in that location. I could swing the $$ for 3 LED cans right now, but 12 gives me heartburn! Plus, I could get the dimmer function with the LEDs over the peninsula which would be nice. My mom has this set-up (central light fixture, with 3 cans over her bar area on a dimmer) and it works great for her. She uses her dimmer all the time depending on what she is doing. I'm still looking at the options, though, and I appreciate everyone's input!

I would continue to use any of the bulbs that still light. They might be a little dimmer than a brand new bulb, but it probably isn't worth $8.50 for the difference.

Yes, 48-inch T8 cool white bulbs from Phililps are much more efficient than the Sylvania Gro-Lites and the Philips bulbs cost only about $2 each from Home Depot when you buy them in a box of 10 bulbs for $19.99. That's what I use. Last year I set out a bunch of zinnias in full bloom, for a very early start here in Maine.

They say, "don't look a gift horse in the mouth", but in this case, I probably would. Home Depot sells good 48-inch 2-bulb Commercial Electric Shoplights for about $8 each. In my opinion, they are much more cost effective than your 24-inch Gro-Lite unit, even considering that it was a gift.

That said, you probably can start some seedlings under your present gift unit. But checkout the Inexpensive Seed Starting System message thread.
