Hostas & Bird Feeders--Friends or Foes?

I have a bird feeder, using mostly only black oil sunflower, in the middle of a developing garden. I've had plantiginea, lancifolia and albomarginata in there for about 4 years now, and never had a problem.

Over the last couple of years, I've added a couple more NOIDS, and, this past fall, some "keepers" to the garden. None of the hostas are closer than about 3 feet from the feeder, but the seed does get strewn about, probably at least a 5 foot radius from the pole. Before I add any more hostas to that garden(or anything else for that matter), I wanted to find out whether a bird feeder is doomed to be in a vast wasteland, void of anything green.

On another forum, the gardeners there say NEVER have flowers and bird feeders in the same space, especially black oil sunflower. They say it kills your plants quicker than anything.

Do any of you feed the birds where your hostas are, and what is your experience with black oil sunflower in particular?

Thanks,

Karen
