I love that Cornell site and I'm pretty impressed with the amount of reviews farmerdill has given there! Really interesting story too. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. :-) I'm not here at the vegetable garden forum usually but I'm glad to know there is such an active, knowledgeable member here. I started a small garden, because I got sick of container growing peppers, both green and hot. But, as anyone will agree with, once you start a small one, it isn't long before you expand. Now, I grow quite a few things, although not tons. For the record, everything I grow is Burpee. Kohlrabi: I LOVE the "early white vienna" type. It has the classic cabbage flavor to me, with a sweetness to it. My absolute favorite veggie. Peas: I grow "super sugar snap" en masse. This variety seems to yield better then the regular sugar snap. They are sweet, and the whole family likes them. Radishes: I have tried "cherry belle", but I found it to be too spicy. Although I like hot food, radish spicy is different. I like the french type, "fire and ice" in particular. They are milder, and have a bit of sweetness to them. Carrots: All I have ever tried is "danvers half long", because they are so good that I have never strayed. Turnips: Turnips never appealed much to me, but the description of "turnip oasis" got me to try them. I'll be planting them from now on, as they indeed are sweet and somewhat melon like. I've never cooked them, only eaten them raw, and they say the sweet taste goes away when cooking. Onions: I only grow the green type, to munch on with a bit of salt while I watch TV. I grow the "parade" type, because it's the only one that is quick to harvest, at only 60 days, versus the 120 that scallions take. They taste like regular ole green onions from the store to me, which is what I like though. Tomatoes: I only grow a few cherry plants each summer, and "sun gold" takes the gold medal. I have grown "juliet" roma tomatoes, which were good. The skin was a bit thick, but they were meaty and sweet. They over produced though, with one plant yielding WAY more then I could eat. Peppers: I just grow your average green bell pepper, banana pepper, and jalapeno. I LOVE peppers, so I grow a lot, but nothing fancy in the way of varieties. Cukes: Plain old burpless type. I do grow "picklebush" though, and make my own pickles. But, eaten fresh, they taste just like all other cukes taste...like cukes. Beans: I always grow the regular "kentucky wonder" type. I like them, the wife and kids like them, so I've never tried any other types. Zucchini: I grow the Burpee hybrid, which is used almost entirely for zucchini bread. I also grow 1 "butterstick" plant, to slice up and grill, or deep fry. We all know that 1 zucchini plant puts out some serious zukes, so 1 or 2 plants is TOPS. Thats pretty much all I got for ya, although this year I will be trying cantaloupe and "chubby checkers" sweet corn. All in all, I have to say, the kholrabi is the thing I look forward to most, with the peppers and sungold cherry tomatoes next. Hey, if something looks or sounds good, try it. Glib the do have a "culture page". Just click on "Cornell Gardening Info". Cornell is arguably the top agricultural research university in the nation. Vegetables are plants and there are lots of variations/varieties. Many that some would call heat or cold loving do well in both heat and cold and some people have much different results than others in the same climate. I tend to look for reviews from growers in hot climates because I live in one. I think dividing up the varieties by heat or cold loving would mess everything up. Once a variety is placed in a category people would over look it if their climate differed. Living in an extreme climate people where I live get told all the time this thing or that thing cannot be grown here. However you would be surprised how often that information is incorrect. If the site where put together like that many (perhaps you too) would complain that too many varieties are in the wrong category and choose not to participate. Even Garden Web does not have a heat or cold loving vegetable variety forum and I don't see you being negative about Garden Web. Cornell's site is not a forum and not in competition with this site. I guess what I'm trying to say is; I just don't understand the apparent double standard. Is there another site you can direct me to that has an organized searchable database of vegetable varieties. One where members can post reviews and keep track of the varieties they grow and review? One where all the reviews for each variety can be found in one place? It does not have to have everything I need or have to present information only how I want to see it. Just so long as the reviews for each variety are easy to find and all kept in one place. Please direct me to it.

Yes, I love the site too. It is a great tool when you're trying to order seeds. I find that I can get persuaded by a description in a catalog and then when I check my list against the reviews by people who are actually growing them, there is often a big difference. So I change what I'm ordering and I've been happier with my choices. I find there aren't very many reviews from people in the Northeast for some reason. Odd. I find it very easy and quick to register and review. I'm trying Zephyr Squash this year, which is their most reviewed 5 star summer squash. Actually the most reviewed vegetable on the site.
