Hi riceke, thanks for the response. I have never grown tomatoes from seed (on purpose anyway). I was lurking in the greenhouse forum since my greenhouse is getting close to being put into use and saw this wonderful thread complete with photos on someone's success in growing Better Boys from seed and then training them as vines along a suspended cattle panel in their greenhouse which looks very similar to mine in approximate size, shape, etc...It looked like a real space-saving technique. I have always done well with Better Boys in the garden and just wanted to get some additional takes on growing them from seed, preferably from folks in my neck of the woods. I have also been conversing with that thread's original poster too and have alot of info to work with. I didn't even know hobby gardeners could grow named market hybrids from seed until I saw her post. Now I'm a little more knowledgeable about F1 and F2 seed generations. Still would love to hear about anyone else's experiences growing Better Boys from F1 (first generation) seed. Specifically tips on germination rates, success and care of young seedlings. I've grown melons, cukes and some flowers from seed so I'm not a total seed growing noob but I am when it comes to starting toms from seed. Danielle

Like the nitwit I am, I was trying to load a picture of a Better Boy, and hit submit instead of preview to see if it went thru. I couldn't get back in to finish what I was going to say. I was gonna offer to go take some pic's of both plants at the nursery right around the corner of the both of them, to see if that might help. I was picking up amendments this weekend and knew they had both. I just got back from there, and the Celebrity's are gone. I think Lowe's might still have both, so if you'd like me go and take some pic's of some labeled ones there, I'd be happy to do so if you think it would help. :) All thumbs Rob

Best guess - mis-labeled plant. Don't know how they could claim heirloom and F1 combo- Better Boy unless it is a grafted stock plant. Maybe they used BB root stock with some heirloom cherry graft? Never heard of it being done but with all this "organic" and "grafted" hype floating around lately it could be anything. Call the vendor. But yeah, those aren't BB tomatoes. Dave

Does Baker Creek own Hart too? Is that good or bad? I've never heard of Baker Creek. Most of my pepper seeds are from Burpee, those seem to do better for me than the ones I tried from Fedco (except for the Hinkelhatz). I don't really like the Burpee tomatoes that much, their Black Krim was OK (though a few didn't seem to be really BK but something else), I'm growing that from Fedco seed this year for comparison. My dad likes Sweet 100 family and I had seeds from last year, I wasn't going to plant Gardener's Delight again this year b/c I think it reverted to currant-sized last year but then I didn't want to pin my hopes for cherries on the Burpee seed so started some GD too, I'll just have to make sure not to get them mixed as might have happened last year just to see which one (if any) produces the tiny fruit again this year. I don't know if I'll plant any Burpee tomatoes at all next year. If peppers don't sell well (I think we've got too short a season) I may drop all peppers next year. Undecided about cukes, squash, etc. - again, I need to see what does best this year. The weather the past 2 years hasn't given anything a fair trial.
