I'm in SE PA and I'm planting mine tomorrow; however, I did pre-sprout my peas and I'm pushing the start date. Peas planted too early may rot in the cold, wet ground, but generally if they are pre-sprouted, they will just go dormant if the weather gets really cold again. If you have enough peas to plant again if they do rot, I'd try it. I pre-sprouted mine by placing in damp-wet paper towels in a ziplock bag. Leave the bag unzipped. I put mine on my seedling rack where the florescent lights warm the area and covered them with a pot to make it dark. They sprouted in 24-48 hours. You could try this and plant later in the week. Japanese Beetles feed on many plants and if the numbers are fairly low the simplest means of control is to go out early in the morning, before they warm up enough to fly away, and knock them off the plant into a bucket of soapy water (the soap keeps them from flying out of the bucket). I have not found Insecticidal Soap to be very effective as a control for these buggers, but Neem Oil products and pyrethrin based sprays do when used with due care since they are vey broad spectrum poisons that will also kill off beneficial insects. I have seen reports that indicate these Japanese Beetles are devloping immunity to Carbaryl and Malathion due to over exposure, genetic modification. GardinGirl OH NO! Well, I waited and Geez, They ate my fall garden to the stem, and as you can see I take the word "Pole" bean literally. LOL. I get on a ladder to pick. The leaves on most of the vines are destroyed. The picture I took is looking up at the eaten leaves at the top. I read that BT will kill the young,(on my plants, they were white/cream tiny larva with a bump like head. They have big heads eh!! BT won't kill the adults because their stomachs are too strong to be affected. This is from an .edu extension pdf, can't remember where. I can't get a balance in my garden. I know on paper what to do, I do it, then something else gets it, now I got whiteflies, and squirrels, and tomato pinworms, and most likely a hornworm somewhere in there LOL!!! If you are lucky, you have enough good pests to eat them, if you keep getting cut leaves, spray the dang things. I also tried Neem Oil, did nothing to them.
