Worst year yet....

Ok, I was excited this year when I saw that many of my hostas have taken their LEAP in growth. But I'll tell ya, this year has been TOUGH!

First, Spring was several weeks late... if that's what you want to call Spring! It's been wet, so that means slugs are gonna be terrible. We usually see them come out by this time, but with the late spring, I don't think they've hit the hostas yet... I have, however, seen holes in my creeping jenny. And the nematodes are surely going to pop their ugliness out rather quickly in late July, just in time for my garden to be on open tours for the MN Hosta Society.

Lots of rain has been good for the hostas, but the 3 hail storms have not. Then, now that the rain has stopped, the wind has been terrible. We'd had so much rain that I hadn't even turned on the irrigation system till 2 days ago.

The Spring has been so windy, it's blown a boat load of those maple helicopters everywhere. Yes, it's been wet and that's contributed to the mess too...

Now, add to that, it's 103 degrees right now. We've not been over 100 for 5 years.

So we've gone from 50 degrees last week to 100 degrees this week. Soaking rain to terrible winds. And the hail.

Ok, it sucks. I'm done belly-achin' for now.

I have been spared the hail but got the winds and the tears in leaves along with it. It seems that the slugs have taken a liking to my Blue Ivory for some reason even though it has heavy substance. That was sad to see.

As we always say, there's always next year.

My first reaction to hearing about these was full preparation to be disgusted. My actual first reaction upon seeing them was: "they aren't as bad as I thought." I think their tackiness factor will ultimately depend on how they are arranged. That said, the price for one single stem is ridiculous. The cost for a dozen is not that far off of a dozen roses around the major rose holidays. I personally feel that just about all florist roses are tacky, and some are already dyed, although not typically so vividly or multi-hued.

Sammy I have been through the morning glory takeover before. It wasn't so bad on roses like felecia but for the really thorny ones it's tough. I found that if you cant get to them right away, try to sever the stems as they come from the soil and then the whole plant will wilt rapidly so the sun can reach the rose leaves. Then you can cut the vines off with a clippers later but if you cant find time for that then by the time winter is coming on, the stems should be dry and brittle enough to break when you pull at them. Winter or spring pruning does away with most of the stems at that point. The challenge is the next year when the seeds sprout. If you have a shop vac I would use it at the base of the roses so you don't have glories growing there. Then I use Karl's advice about cardboard and mulch to defeat the rest. Karl was a great help to me when I battled these guys. I still love them just not near the roses.

Primarily AWFUL. Seedlings sucked. Very poor root structure. Tried to promote root growth, ended up completely suppressing it. I never harden off, and never have any problems. This year, MASSIVE sunburn killed the bottom 6 or 7 side branches on most seedlings within a week of planting. I suspect that the weak root structure had something to do with the inability to handle the sun (which was really no different than any other year). Then a massive hailstorm reduced several rows (that were not sheltered by my house) to stems. With these stems and the effects of sunburn, decided to carefully dig up about half of my 40 plants and use the trench method. After this I had some success. Plenty of rain helped plants grow full and large. However, that rain became a problem (as it did for many others), and although I did get a fair bit of fruit production (some of which was spectacular, particularly Cherokee Purple), many of the plants stopped growing and began to die before the end of July. So, after a very slow start that saw production delayed by 3 or more weeks, plants pooped out several weeks before they typically do. Besides cherokee purple success, had some tasty black krims and some tasty indian stripe. Kellogs breakfast was awful. Homer Fike's yellow oxheart gave some nice specimens (including a 42-ouncer). Big Zac was big but taste was nothing special. Cherokee Green looked more like Emerald Evergreen, but did taste good. Green Giant plants gave 1 or 2 tomatoes total. Marianne's peace also gave some nice specimens that tasted good, similar to Brandywine sudduth (which gave a few good fruits but not enough production to get excited about). A few unknowns that always do well for me failed almost completely, very bad BER. When I pulled up plants, several had roots that seemed to be rotted. Hope it was just the water and not something more problematic. Finally, I had some seeds that were saved from a purple haze tomato. One plant was regular leafed and produced small (1-1/2 inch wide) beefsteaks that had the colour and taste of black cherry. The other plant was potato leaf, and produced groups of 10 or so tomatoes that started oblong and ended up round and about the size of a golf ball. They ripened very slowly, and had a sweet fruity taste (like a sweet plum or sweet cherry, and I am referring to the fruits not the tomatoes), absolutely nothing like a black cherry, brandywine, or cherokee purple (the supposed parent strains). Saved seeds from both of these but did not bag flowers so might be some cross pollenation. A few tomatoes left on the counter...maybe 1 or 2 more salads and then time to wait until next year...

Two back-to-back family parties has kept me away from the computer since originating this post -- but WOW - thanks for all of the informative responses! I will use a lot of this advice. Seeing an allergist is probably the best route to go -- but since his exams are this week, the best I can do is suggest things to him that will make him more comfortable. I am fortunate in that I am NOT a seasonal-allergy sufferer but for a few sneezes here and there... and so it only recently occurred to me to NOT HANG his clothes outdoors in the fresh air (DUH!) And to not have his fan blowing fresh air into his room. Seems so logical to those of you who suffer - but this is new to me. He does wear contacts (dailies), but I will suggest he doesn't for however long allergy "season" lasts. Thanks again for all the suggestions and tips. I am going back to reread all the responses... take some notes... and share them with him when he comes home later. Have a good evening!

I feel for you Melissa, at least the people that come visit my gardens still think hostas are green or green and white.

Melissa, sorry to hear that...it's hardest when you know someone is coming to see... Winds were hard on my transplants that I did last week. I watered them like crazy, and shaded them from the sun, but the wind, I couldn't do anything about.

It's the same here-except the over 100 degree weather hast't hit. I totally understand about the heat- before last year I think I looked up the record for here and it was something like the last time it was over 100 was back in the late 70's. It sure has been weird- a lot of my perennials either came up and died or are taking forever to come up. My David phlox was 2" tall then disappeared(although I noticed a field mouse the other day)lucky me it's starting to grow back again. There is still the rest of the summer so maybe it will even out!

Frank, I have a huge slug population and therefore only buy thick, slug resistant hosta. Even so, they still go after them, especially the ones with white or cream. They never touch June, but will go after the centers of High Society and Remember Me.

It has been one of those years. We still have about 280 acres of soybeans yet to get planted. I learned a long time ago that mother nature can never quite be figured out.

Coll, I do not know your zone, but in my zone 5a garden I have seen only one small slug yet, but have 2 hostas with 2 holes each. Per melissa that might mean the slugs are not out yet. And yes, I have seen a dead slug from anti-slug pellets. So who knows when my slug season will start, or I am lucky this year.
We will have the heat wave the next 2 days, 97 and 96 F, will water a lot, thereafter in the 70s. Big storms were meaningless in my garden, no hail, lucky.

We have had a similar year to Mn. hear in Ia.
thankfully we have dodged the hail though..I hear you about the long cool wet, and now the blustery heat !

Those two or three nights of 32-33 lows when my hosta were all just opening had me wondering what would be the result...I never cared at all about that kind of thing before the hosta bug got me !

As they say in my business, anyone can grow corn in Iowa and Northern and Central Illinois. The real good farmers figure out how to make it profitable outside of those geographies.

There is another saying, anyone can grow hostas in Minnesota. The rest of us envy the great temperatures and rainfall you typically have while we try to grow hostas in hot and humid conditions.

Farmer have one more saying....wait till next year.
