Time to decide which tomatoes to grow in 2011

Repeats will be Sun Gold, Cherokee Purple, Viva Italia, Brandy Boy, and Sweet Tangerine.

Going to add Black Cherry and would like a red beefsteak. Got recommendations on Tomato Growing forum for Beefy Boy. Still undecided.

Anyone else have a list?

Took a look at the TGS catalog this morning and I'm thinking about adding Bradley and Church. Have you tried either one?

I grew a few plants last year. Three Romas and two others. Don't know what the other varieties were because I got the plants from my Grandma.

I'd like to try Sun Gold this year. natal, will you tell me about Sun Gold? Do you grow from seed or do you buy transplants?

Boomer Sooner. The reason I'm interested is it is one my favorites. And one that usually does well for me. Way better than KBX. I know several growers that have experienced the same results I have and then others who have had opposite results from mine. In my opinion the best overall orange beefsteak type I've grown. KBX has better flavor but more disease prone and production is about 80-90% less than KB. Diane. It should be 9 Dings. If you do a search or read some of Tom's postings you will see it mentioned. Carol, You're welcome. Gary has a wonderful assortment of plants, and if I lived anywhere near Tulsa, I'd visit the Farmer's Market and other places where he sells plants so often he'd probably think I was stalking him. I've been outside mowing up leaves this morning, collecting them in the grass catcher, and then dumping them into black lawn-and-leaf bags. It takes a lot of lawnmower grasscatcher bags full of mown leaves to fill up one big lawn and leaf bag. I hope to fill up 150 of those bags in the coming weeks so I'll have oodles to dump onto the garden beds. The wind is blowing hard and bringing down lots of leaves this week, so I should get a few bags done this week, but it is still warm enough during the day that I have to watch for snakes. My most recent snake sighting was a little skinny non-venomous snake in the garden on Monday. Even after the first few freezes, the ground is still pretty warm and the snakes come out on warm days. I usually don't see any snakes after December 1st though. My plan is to mow leaves all day, taking periodic rest breaks which double as housework breaks---so I can come inside from mowing leaves, sit down and rest a minute while I drink something cold, and then do laundry or vacuum or whatever before going back outside. I can get a lot done when I alternate back and forth because it keeps me from getting too bored. If I tried to mow leaves all day without a break, I'd get bored and just stop. I noticed a few onions in the garden today. Guess I missed a couple when I harvested, so I'll have to dig in the soil around them and see what I've got. With all the wind blowing and the grasses dormant and dry, I've been somewhat concerned about the prospects of grassfires, but so far it's been pretty quiet with only a couple of them lately. In the meantime, I'm a leaf-mowing maniac.

"A plant drinks 6-7 litters of water a day now" No, there is no way that plant needs more than 3 liters per day. If you've measured properly (and it is not draining out, I interpret my comment about overheating the soil as being the *principal* problem. Fix that! When the leaves get to that stage I pinch them off. I don't know whether the curl is from heat and dying alone, or if there is something else there, but it look not bad so far. The only reason to keep a leaf like that is if it is shading a fruit and keeping the sun off. Otherwise keeping it on the plant will only increase the chances a weakened plant will get an out of control disease, IMO, because they are are good media for breeding of pathogens. The plant has already withdrawn nutrients from it which as seysonn mentioned may not be optimally delivered. The damage doesn't look too bad (diseased) to me, could be prompted from insects and the plant naturally removing nutrients from it to give to nerw growth. Nothing wrong with pinching off leaves from the bottom as the plant gets taller and puts out more in the zones where the new fruits are developing. While the above ground plant can tolerate those high temperatures,the roots are in overdrive and very uncomfortable. This will just weaken your plant.

Going from LED to outside can be brutal because the leaves are way bigger and plants are not heat/UV hardened. I personally don't think the UV is helpful, because it forces you to keep the light way higher than it should be at. So your UV and ideal blue/red LUX height are not the same. I try to aim for about 50,000 LUX which is roughly full sun intensity for LED.

Showrfresh, I buy seeds. Haven't seen plants available in the trade, but it's about time.

Sun Gold is fruity and sweet ... hands down the best cherry tomato time I've ever tasted! Plants get very tall and produce for a long period.

Natal, your garden is absolutely beautiful! What type of tomato cages do you use?

They sell Sun Gold plants over at a Tasteful Garden - http://www.tastefulgarden.com/. I've gotten fall gardening transplants from them before and was pleased.

I think I am going to grow Sun Gold, Opalka, and get another one of those tomato transplants from my Grandma and Grandpa. This year, I'll ask about the variety. :)

I use Texas Tomato Cages and 8' tall plastic-coated steel stakes. I only have 6 of the cages, so all the other plants get staked. That Sun Gold in the pic above is growing in an obelisk.

Wow Natal your garden is lovely. I just started some tomato, pepper, and eggplant seeds tonight with my grandson. He's 11 and loves to help. I don't have as many varieties this year. I might see what seeds the big box stores and wallyworld are offering this year. We started some beefstakes, yellow stuffers, orange mid size called Julilee, grape cherries, and Better boys. My favorite cherry is yellow pear so I'll look for some seeds. We were not very successful with our garden last year so we're hopeing for a better harvest this year. The garden looks better this year. My husband has been running the disc through it at least once a month to keep the weeds out and
to keep the soil loose and workable. I'll keep checking in to see how ya'll are doing. Good luck with your gardens.

Showrfresh, that's not a bad price for plants. If you try Sun Gold let me know what you think later in the season.

Deepsouth, thanks. I started some flower seeds yesterday, still a little early here for tomatoes & peppers.
