Karolina, I want to let you know that a few of my roses have been doing the exact same thing this year--I think it's the extreme dry heat we've been getting all spring. When spring started, the roses threw out nice long canes to try to bloom, I took off most buds, after that, they began to grow these short candelabra canes with flower buds on top. I'm pretty sure it's not a disease, I think probably just less than ideal growing condition/environment, I'm hoping we will get a cool and wet fall/winter so the roses can get a break from being constantly pushed to grow and bloom, poor things. Anyways if you go to the webpage I'm attaching here, you can see the leaves on that obviously very healthy rose's candelabra canes are different from the big leaves, I don't think it's anything to worry about. Same with the masses of thorns. Deer damage can also cause candelabra growth, it happened to my Martina Mondadori. Here is a link that might be useful: Pruning Candelabras

I have a second push I'm watching right now of that famous tan to orange color we all love so much. I'm just watching a wave go across my gardens as these 100+ days continue non-stop combined with the killer 20-30 mile an hour winds. At these temps, that wind is just sucking the life out of the needles. It's so hard to watch and know I can't do a thing about it. Hottest and driest spring since the dust bowl. Dave, you're not that much north of me. Are you having any temp related issues or is it not as hot there? mark

We've all been there, Renee; it happens to me every year, it seems. Things that were gangbusters last year and a bust, or a partial bust, this year are a part of gardening. And yes, I'm talking to YOU, you nonblooming Princess Victoria Louise poppies, who put up lovely clumps of leaves, but nothing else! And YOU, "reblooming" tall bearded iris Clarence. (You can't rebloom if you haven't bloomed even once.) And the less said about you, TB iris Rosalie Figgie, the better. Although sometimes it's difficult, I try not to let it get to me -- to see the overall loveliness and not dwell on the individual disappointments. Especially since I'm more than willing to accept the reverse -- plantings that were mediocre at best one year and become Stars of the Garden the year after. (Brava, Bolero, finally ecstatically happy in a pot!) So mebbe this year they are Dwarf Somewhat-Less- Than-Imperial Larkspur. They are still lovely. Kay
