Your Growing Experience on 'Sugar Snap' Peas?

Hi, I'm a newbie at growing peas, and I got "Sugar Snap" peas. I know enough to know that this is a type that can be picked pod and all (correct me if I'm wrong), and I'd like to know more about growing this particular type, your experience with them, how they produced, etc

I'd post pictures, but I don't know how. Help?

Also, in my zone, is it too late to be planting some more pea seeds? Or do I still have time? (I live in Houston)

Probably late for Houston. They are as easy to grow as any Pisum sativum. The original Sugar Snap is a large plant (4 ft or so) but the best yielding and tasting of the cultivars I have grown. I can't answer your question but it caused me to think of another one. Assuming the window boxes will work, why not elevate the boxes off the ground in some way and let the pea vines hang? You wouldn't need any trellis. I have a window box under the window sill of my garden shed. Maybe I'll try that. Jim

Can you differentiate between peas/snow peas/sugar snaps?

Your dwarf gray sugar snow peas will have purple blossoms...that's the easy one for me to tell early on. The others you list should all be white flowered. The pods on the Sugar Pod 2 Snow Peas will be flat for quite awhile and the seeds will show though as small bumps. Pick them before the seeds grow large and the pods become rounder since the pods will be tough by then. The Burpeeana Early Peas will have pods that do not stay flat for long and do not show small seeds through the pod. Of course you want to leave this growing until the pods fill with good sized peas. I'd have trouble telling the Sugar Daddy Snaps from the Burpeeana's but since both are picked with rounded pods you can try them and see which has the fibrous pod.....BINGO...that's the Burpeeana and the other should be the tender snap pea, Sugar Daddy. In my garden, heights have not always agreed with the reported info. And some keep growing aller for a longer time and the height when flowering begins changes alot.

i tried Sugar Sprint this year which is smaller and not as delicious as Super Sugar Snap but is only about 2 or 3 feet tall and stringless. i like to let SSS get really fat before harvest, is it just me or do they seem to get sweeter that way? The pods must be strung at any age but it is so much easier to string a fresh pea. queenofthemountain, did you get to taste any of the Sugar Snaps to compare to Super Sugar Snap? i have heard others say the taste is better? But also what your experience confirms, no resistance to PM. i was suprised to discover that snap peas come in yellow and purple. i know Sylvia grew some Golden Sweet snow peas recently and i just received some Opal Creek and Sugar Magnolia seeds. Anyone else trying any of the colored podded peas?

Johnny's Selected Seeds addressed this issue with peas recently. Here is some info from them: http://www.johnnyseeds.com/growers-library/vegetables/selection-pea-seed-quality.html They had/have a breeder working on "cleaning up" the seed stock for them. I have experienced unwanted variations in some of the varieties I grow the last few years. Some edible pod peas were definitely NOT edible to me. I've even thought about spacing some of my own plants widely and rouging out the unwanted ones and then saving (hopefully) truer to type seed myself. My worst seed lots were from two different types of peas, one a snow pea variety and one a snap type variety. They were from two different vendors....one sold at a local store, and one ordered online. Both are well known names, but I prefer not to name them as I think this is a widespread problem. Neither one was Johnny's, though. I think they are working hard to supply their customers with top quality seed. Hopefully, other companies will do the same.

All Pisum sativum seem to grow really well here, and they thrive until it gets hot. Then they get all brown and pitiful and die, but not before producing a lot. I have grown the sugar snaps bush and pole, and the snow peas, bush and pole (different varieties, I can look it up if you'd like, but they all do well). I planted in December, then again in January, and just this last week but the last planting will be a bit late if we get a warm spring. I just like them staggered this way I can keep collecting peas continuously until the spring comes.

Sugar Snaps get tall so need support. Super Sugar Snap is supposed to be more disease resistant. Sugar Ann and some others are shorter so don't need as much support. I used to grow them in a wire fencing circle 3' across but it makes it hard to pick them. If you can put up a row of fencing it is easy. They are great raw, fleshy pods. I rarely cook them unless they are a little over the hill.

Snow peas are usually used before the seeds develope like in Chinese cooking, but are good raw and I let the seeds develope if I'm eating them raw like the snap peas.

My experience has been they are easily the most prolific vegetable we've ever grown. We do container gardening and there were not many pests- don't kinow if the sugar snaps are not interesting to them or the cold weather accompanying winter kept them down. My seed packet (I was saving half for next week) got wet and they all sprouted so 3 weeks ago I was rounding up all the containers I could find to get those latecomers planted out! Don't know how they'll do thru March and April- it is starting to warm up- but just didn't want to compost all those little sprouts.
