Ahhhh, the lazy part - been there, do that too! Dance With Me - I've heard it is hard so I never got it. Earth Angel - grows like a weed, love it. Ice Age Trail - I had it, got it as a young TC and grew it in a pot but it didn't survive this spring. I've seen pics of IAT purchased from Jim's Hosta that were big and gorgeous. It also is a streaker plant and will produce other streaked plants from seed. If you get it, save me some seeds. Touch of Class - gorgeous, don't have it but have one of the look alikes named Dream Weaver. It does very well here and intro'd by Kevin Walleck, our current AHS prez. Jewel of the Nile - another KW intro and it grows like a weed here. Paradigm - a classic, yes to it. Liberty - a new one for me last fall. It almost didn't come back and when it did was puny. I dug it up and potted it - the leaf is 1" and probably won't make it back next year. I replaced it, it has only produced one new leaf - I hope it comes back next spring. Liberty is a sport, probably tetraploid of Sagae. I highly recommend Sagae for the look, the margin just isn't as wide. I don't have any of the others and have heard nothing about them. For a balanced hosta garden, make sure you bring in solid colors to offset the patterned cultivars. I didn't because I love all the same type. I then had to go back and bring in some solids and to move things around to please the eye. It is the same as the daylily addiction - we bring in our favorite colors, look around and it becomes blah, so we then bring in other colors to liven things up. Some good blues in different sizes I recommend - Abiqua Drinking Gouard or Love Pat - great color, upright growing. Small blues that hold their color late into the season - Blue Jay and Fragrant Blue. Dark greens - Fried Green Tomatoes, a couple of Lakeside plants that I can't remember right now. If you want big, try some of the sports from Sum and Substance - Sum It Up, Bottom Line and Sum of All. Big, fast growing, all with edges but not "clashy" edges. They are all dark green. Other must haves - June, Paul's Glory or St. Paul. I know you don't like the skinny leaves but consider Ginsu Knife, has a slight light margin but lots of rippling on the edge, Marilyn Monroe, lighter green with ripples and Queen of the Seas, big blue with ripples. These offset the big round leaves that I love. For golds, Choo Choo Train, Sweet Sunshine, I think, hybridized by Solberg and a couple more Lakesides I can't remember, really make the shady areas pop. Have fun as another addiction starts. Hey Paul Glad I could enable someone else besides myself LOL They always have a nice selection of Hostas and they also have a website that tells you what's on sale. No Mango Tango when I stopped, The way it was I had some in hand and played eenie meenie with the plants. I like Mango Tango and funny thing is Roy Klehm lost out to one that I did come home with. I will have to check back next time I am going that way. Saw some nice Heuchera there also, A friend of mine told me about the place a couple years ago, not very Big but lots of plants! They have a hosta list on their website but didn't see anything about mail-order. Hi Phil~ I bought Holy Mole last year from Direct Source, one nice fat eye, and now it is three. I also bought 2 more Guacs locally. They had more eyes in the pots, and have even more this year. But Holy Mole is wider, has bigger leaves, and the variegation is more pronounced. I have too much sun in my backyard for most shade plants, and too little sun for most sun-loving palnts. I have several hours of midday hot sun, with dappled sun from tall oaks the rest of the time. I wanted to add some broad leafed plants to the daylilies and phlox, which are 2 things I grow well, but are bor-ing when not in bloom. I extended one of my part-sun beds in the fall of 2005, and planted some so-called sun tolerant hostas. Maya Swingtime, Summer Breeze and another had to be rescued in the spring last year. I replaced them with the 2 Guacs and the Holy Mole. All 3 thrived. The only problem is that they are still pretty much green. This year I've added Stained Glass, Tortilla Chip, Diana Remembered, Ginsu Knife, and will divide my Fragrant Dream and Austin Dickinson in the fall. I have several other fragrant hostas, all supposedly sun/heat tolerant, but they have either all green leaves or only narrow white edges. I want to brighten up my "green" areas when they aren't in bloom. I happened to take a picture of Holy Mole and a single leaf yesterday. I am going to try to at least take one picture of each hosta I have, even if it is new and dinky and I don't like it. Last year I only had pictures of the ones that I am pleased with. Paul, it took me two minutes to scroll down to the bottom of this thread to respond about your Celtic Dancer. I was smitten first look, it has to go in the cluster I have of Candy Dish, Irish Luck, Celtic Uplands (which makes beaucoup seedpods) and I think something nice and yellow/green in the middle, maybe Smooth Sailing. Well, anyway, I am now looking for Celtic Dancer, not for the WISH list, but for the FALL ORDER list. Fall is just around the corner, and most nurseries up nawth will not ship or dig after October 1st. So not much time left to find it. This thread is killing me! Paul, do you have Fruit Punch to go with your Eola Salad Bowl? It has all kinds of colors going on, but the squirrels ate mine this spring....before I peppered the pots.
