Hello all, I have been having the same issues. Let me recount my story for you. I planted zucchini eight ball squash, yellow crooked neck squash, and butternut squash. They were all doing awesome and producing a lot of fruit. Then the snails arrived. They were eating all my fruit so I bought some natria slug and snail killer. Worked like a charm. I was watering the plant for 10 minutes 2 times a day, in the morning and in the evening. This brought out the white mold on the leaves. I tried using a milk and water mixture to spray the leaves as well as cutting off all the infected leaves. This kind of worked, but I have been battling it for 2 months, but not seriously trying. I cut the watering back to 1 time a day in the morning for 10 minutes. Recently I have switched it to 3 times a week for 10 minutes. But what I have noticed is that the new leaves yellow and quickly turn brown and die. What would be causing this? I have checked for vine borers by slitting open some leaf stems but I found nothing. Started out great and now leaves started yellowing and just now they are starting to brown Heres is a little bug hat I've seen around my plants...it looks like a discolored lady bug. You can probably get a zillion of "appropriate" times to plant hydrangeas here. Mine: because I do not like to mess around with the leaves getting zapped by late frosts and such in winter, I wait about 2 weeks after my avge date of last frost. Hydrangeas do not do well indoors so, you may have to plant the lacecap outside and see how it does or grow it in pots and bring the pot into an enclosed garage during winter. Most "named" mopheads and lacecaps do well in Zone 6 or higher. In Zone 5, you sometimes have to winter protect. Note: should these hydrangeas rebloom, you could leave them outside unprotected and still get bloomage, albeit later than you would if you had winter protected them. Unnamed mophead/lacecap hydrangeas are the ones you buy at grocery stores or florists. The label/stickers read "Hydrangea".... or maybe "Red Hydrangea".That is it. You are left wondering if it will do fine where you live during the winter months. Some of those unnamed hydrangeas have a hard time with winters so some people throw them away after blooming has completed. But some unnamed hydrangeas, however, could actually be named varieties that can handle winter (or that can handle them if you winter protect) so, I say give them a try outside anyways.. Talking about names.... do you know the names of these varieties? If so, post the names since someone might recognize them and tell you more about them. For Zone 5, the hydrangeas I would search for are reblooming Hydrangeas macrophylla; Hydrangeas arborescens; Hydrangeas paniculata; and Hydrangeas quercifolia (aka, oakleaf hydrangeas). skoprow.... I have 2 'Lemon Daddy', one planted near the trunk of an old White Oak, the other one in a location that receives some morning sunlight. There seems to be no difference in the color of the foliage, both are bright yellow and they seem to hold their color all summer. The flowers are not as large as 'Big Daddy', but that may be an inherent feature or because of their location. My two 'Lemon Zest' do not seem to be as robust as LD. One receives several hours of morning sun, other several hours of afternoon sun. May move one of them to a total shade location, to see if any improvement. As of now, I wouldn't recommend it, unless you have the patience of Jobe! Having to relocate 'Sun Goddess'. as it is in a location that receives some afternoon sunlight and very little water, even when it rains, as it's sheltered somewhat by a Southern Magnolia. ego45... I would be interested in a cutting of your 'Golden Sunlight', since we are still beleagured by a pesistent drought, the local plant purveyors have decided to switch to drought tolerant plants, which doesn't include Hydrangeas. It may be years, if ever, that I will find that one locally. H. serratas are not in demand hereabouts, because they don't have showy flowers! The few collectors here have no clout. It smells sweet. H. Golden Crane also has fragrance and it is sweet also. Not Daphne like or rose sweet but pleasant. You have to get close to Splash, but not Golden Crane. It send its scent around the garden - but bees are not particularly attracted to Golden Crane. H. Plum Passion is noted for it's beautiful foliage and most descriptions poo poo the soft pink/coral infertile blossoms, but the bees just cover the fertile blossoms and I think it is really beautiful. Here are some shots of Plum Passion I took this weekend. It is not blooming yet but the purple foliage is gorgeous - especially with the light shining through the leaves. The plant is about 8 feet tall and I can get under the branches to take the pics.
