Alderman (Tall Telephone) like peas?

Last summer I grew Alderman (Tall Telephone) peas. Yummy! And the bending over involved was in the planting 'cause the grew nearly 6 ft.

Got the seeds at Agway last spring. This year the only place I've seen them is in Fedco's online catalog.

My question is, are there any other pea varieties that grow nice and tall like this variety? I like putting them on Gardener's Supply bean/pea towers.

Yes, there are, but they aren't readily available. The original sugar snap pea that came out a few years ago is a pole variety, but the more recent ones are dwarf vines. I got about 10 varieties from members of SSE a couple of years ago that are all pole--some snow peas, some soup peas, some English peas, and some snap peas. Then I had a couple of really dry years when I didn't plant a garden, so I haven't grown them out. This year they are going in.

Peas are really easy to save for seeds. Just let a few pods ripen to crispiness on the vine. If you plant a full row, let perhaps 3-5 go to seed and you will have plenty of seeds for next year, and to share with others. Same with the tower.

When picking my peas I missed a few last year & wondered if they would be good for soup or sowing. I will try that this year. I just wonder why there aren't more tall varieties? Tall towers seem *so* much easier.

Does anyone dry their peas for soup?

None of Stokes offering of shelling type peas are really climbing. One of few out there is Tall Tejlephone or Alderman. Snap peas, Sugar Snap, Super Sugar Snap are climbers. I have grown several of the Stokes listed varieties. Strike has been the best performer. Laxton's Progress is a prolific producer but not as sweet. Mr.Big has huge pods and peas and is a reasonable producer. Bolero is pretty good. Knight was somewhat of a dissapointment. All of them top out at about 3 feet.

Everything about "Telephone" is large - including the pods, and the peas themselves. When trellised, the pods are easy to find. The peas were almost too large for my liking... but they do have a strong pea flavor, without the excessive sweetness bred into so many newer varieties. They make a really good stew pea. "Green Arrow" has vines long enough to train, and has very long pods (usually borne in pairs) filled with 8-10 medium-sized peas. It is the heaviest yielder that I have grown to date. In addition, is has resistance to several pea diseases. There are a lot of heirloom pea varieties with tall vines, but other than "Telephone", few are still available commercially.

The vines are quite hardy, blooms and pods are not. The problem with fall peas is getting them started early enough. Growth really slows down with shortened daylight hours so they take a lot longer than spring grown. I don't have much luck with fall peas here. I do plant in November and overwinter for early spring peas, but I don't do Alderman/Tall Telephone.

There are only 2 possibilities that I can think of based on your description.1. Improper N-P-K ratio. Both Limas and peas require phosphate (P). Low Phosphate and high nitrates in the soil will result in great vines but little seed production 2. Soil pH. both of these like a neutral pH and do not respond well in an acidic soil.
