need a non toxic bean pole preervative

Someplace on the journey to forever site, I once saw that you can preserve wood with charcoal and boiled linseed oil. Sounds neat, but I can't find the page it was on. I also can't find a source of crushed charcoal. I have tried to hammer lump charcoal into crushed charcoal with not much luck.

What is everyone else doing to coat there poles in a non toxic way? Or do you even bother? How long can you use a bamboo pole before it rots in the soil?

Any help at all along these lines would be greatly appreciated.

Mary
