Leigh First, there's probably no way to know what beans are bush and what beans are climbers without knowing the varieties. I also suspect that if you've plant them in rows, they'll cross pollinate. That's okay, though you won't be able to save the ones you like best if they're no longer true to the ones you planted. You said you'd planted them but don't have room for bush beans. You must mean you started them inside? Can you contact the bean distributor and ask what varieties of beans are in the package? That would give you a good place to start if you can find that information. Anyway, it sounds like you'll have fun with all those beans! Since you don't know which are bush and which are climbers, if you can't quickly ID them, I'd plant them all under a trellis and let the tall ones climb!

When you have a limited amount of space like I do trellising space is crucial.I have two 4x8 beds which face north to south direction so putting a trellis at south end of the garden would shade out everything else. I put the trellis on the north end which gives me 4 squares per bed(8 squares in all).I plant 4 squares in tomatoes and 4 in green beans. I added some extra trellising space up the sides of both beds which I used for cuks and more tomatoes. I would like to plant other vining type plants like butter beans or summer squash but trellis space is unavailable and none can be added because it would shade out other plants. Planting the bush beans is a really good idea for canning, but how many squares does it take to make a large enough crop for canning, and do you have any problems with them getting into other squares?

Well, you're right. There's a lot of discussion about spacing. Six inches apart will give you larger, meaning wider, plants. I plant mine about four inches apart around a 3 foot circumference teepee. They do great. You can mix different varieties. I have done it. They definitely will cross pollinate, but if you don't mind or don't save seed it doesn't matter. (I grew Fortex and LA Purple pod together one time. Saved seed and got violet Fortex the next year. They were good.) You don't say where you live, but I can definitely recommend Rattlesnake as a great heat tolerant, productive, and delicious bean. Fortex is delicious. Not as productive in my heat, but is a great fall bean. I also like Emerite and LA Purple. I don't know if I'd mix snaps with Limas. Limas take so long to produce that my snaps would be done (due to high heat. The limas keep going). I find that one good teepee of limas, picked twice a week over the season gives me a year's supply. I mainly use them in soups and have a small family though. I love Mezcla. One of these years I'm going to try King of the Garden. :)
