Hi all,does anyone know if this place is open to the public or strictly mail order.TIA,Phil

Hi Phil, It is mail order but my husband and I did get a chance to visit last week. I posted something on here. All I can say is call Jeff, I'm sure he will tell you to stop by. I will tell you about our trip next week. I will be at your hosta walk with Carol. He does have gorgeous hostas! Nancy

Hi Phil,
They like you to call ahead,not to happy with drop in's.
Their hosta are really nice,the grounds real pretty and layed out beautifully.
Nancy, is his name Jeff,or Jerry,any way,he and his wife are very sweet,they dig the hosta right there on the spot,clean off the roots,and you take them bare root,so bring a bucket,although,his wife will wrap them very well for you.
I would go back again,it is a nice drive also.He is a bit slow digging,so plan on being there for awhile,but there are a lot of hosta to look at,so you won;t be bored.:0)

I think Hallson's like a lot of us, and many other nurseries, suffered a lot from frost damage this Spring. Take a look at this pic of Spartacus. You can see a little frost damage in a leaf on the left hand side. There were a few more leaves that were removed. But it's still a beautiful plant for one that arrived a few weeks ago. Chris, without my asking, reduced the price of this plant (and one other) to half! Most other places would have charged full price for a plant that looks that good. That's the kind of integrity you are dealing with in Hallson's. Email him. He's not going to sell you anything you won't be satisfied with. Steve

I look at number of eyes (4 to 5 here) which means a large crown. Roots on one of them were relatively short for the plant size, the other one were long. But it is always difficult to dig up all the roots with a large plant, especially when digging up a division from heavy soil. Other large divisions I received a month ago are doing great. Especially one, H.'Lakeside Shore Master' has grown new leaves and does not look like a transplant. I am looking at next year's performance, and next year these plants will be looking like established clumps. Yes, the free streaker! That's a real beauty. But I bought seeds from streakers from LOTG's sister site this January, so they know I am in streakers, I think. Bernd

Phil, congratulations, you were so lucky to attend this meeting. What wonderful plants to observe! Jeff Miller seemed to have arranged the event very well. Then you also could wander through the fields and gardens of Land of the Giants hosta farm. I must say that I am sorry to live far away in the East. I think there will be shown a lot of pictures of this event on the Hosta Seed Growers Forum, will look at them. Thanks for showing your pictures! Bernd

My hostas arrived; biggest plants I have ever received

I ordered four hostas last summer from LOTG for our lake cabin, and they were large and impressive. However, this year they are not large and impressive. They are small and unimpressive although they are very large varieties -- Journey's End, Satisfaction, Sun Power and Elegans. I'm guessing it may be because last year they were parts of large hostas and this year they are two-eyed plants. Or it may be a siting problem, but I planted them in an area of no root competition, excellent drainage with slightly sandy soil and a slope. I thought at the time it was the best spot I had ever planted a hosta. Or it could be this year's wacky weather, including 18 inches of snow there in early May. So we'll see.
