Pie crust hostas

I am pretty new to hostas and have just discovered the pie crust ones. Love them but need advice. Which one would be suitable for a relative beginner and for a less-than-suitable spot? My shady spot can sometimes be soggy in the spring. Hostas that are doing well there now are Frances Williams, Praying Hands, Halcyon and Aquibica Drinking Gourd (spelling looks terrible on that one). Each has overwintered at least three years. I love Niagara Falls. Is there hope? Also I am officially zone 2b.

Zone 2B? Yikes! How many weeks (days?) of summer do you have up there?
If you are really worried about sogginess, what about planting your new pet in a pot? If you have a garage, you can park it there in the winter. Just don't over-water before you put it into storage. Damp is the way to go (IMHO). Once they go into the garage, I don't water them at all until spring. Haven't lost one yet (knock on wood).

This is my second year with Niagara Falls, and it's doing beautifully. Great-looking hosta. I have a soggy spot too (not where Niagara Falls is planted though), and the hostas who live there, St. Paul, Blue Angel and Gold Regal, are lovin' it. Seems as if I've heard of many more hostas that suffer from lack of water than from too much water. Good luck, and have fun.

Hostanista, I purchased Neptune and Irish Luck both this past year, both were very impressive with lovely ruffling in 1gal pots, and held up well throughout the season with no difficulties. Alas, Niagara Falls has never done it for me, and I don't think I like Bridal Falls any better (bad girl, eh, as I grew up in the Niagara area!). Spartacus has been at the top of my list since I saw a photo of Don's a few months ago, so has Rubies and Rufffles, and American Choo Choo looks quite intriguing as well, so yes it is on my list too. I found it a little difficult to source, but Hosta Choice has it for I think $25. It is a non-registered sport of Choo Choo Train from Wade. HC also has Spartacus and Fleet Week mentioned above by BCHosta. It might be in the best interests of your (our) ahem, obsession, to check them out! Have fun!

YIKES.....I placed an order for Sea Gulf Stream a few days ago, based on pictures and words about it here. Don't have Fire Island, it might be a perfect companion for my other yellow golds, which come and go in their degree of goldness. I like them all, at all stages. One of my pretties is a Stuart Asch hosta, Bibb Lettuce. When it came last year, it was very tender like a head of lettuce. I had no hope it would endure the rigors of our heat and humidity without getting parboiled. It really surprised me this spring with the show it put on. It is a more vigorous plant now, and it had a better substance--which is required to stand the humidity, IMHO--and now it is becoming a limey yellow. Here he is in May 2013 And here earlier in the year, in March. One of the earlier hosta to look good.

OK, next year I'm going to put that pot on the porch in full shade so that we can see QOTS as blue as it can get, and I'll report back this time next year with photos. I did that with a St Paul two years ago, and posted photos; it was almost navy blue! Now it's sitting where it gets a couple of hours of sun and by this time of the year the blue has melted away.... so, there will be no more "QOTS bashing" from me for a full 365 days!! LOL :-) KN

We actually have beautiful and often very hot summers--short of course. We usually can count on 90 frost-free days but have also had frost in every month of the year some years. I can grow many zone 3 things and will even try the odd zone 4 if I am really in love with it. The upside is long daylight hours. Right now the sun is rising before 5 am and not setting until 10:30 pm so things grow like crazy for the short time they have. Thanks for the advice. My garage will hit -45C most likely this winter but I have a cool spot in the basement I could try. I would really rather have one that can live outside, however.

There are people in Alaska who collect hostas, so I think you will do better with them in the ground even at those extremes.
Party Favor and Niagara Falls are probably my best easy to grow piecrust edged ones. Donohue's piecrust is very nice, Sea Gulf Stream too. Newer ones for me are Lakeside Ripples and Piecrust Power. I'm in Ohio.
