Sometimes there is just no explaining what is going to appeal to them. All of us on this block have been babying a doe (with nursing fawn) who was injured in early summer...she's now like a big (healthy) dog with a growing teen baby dog who is probably much too friendly visiting each garden every day. By babying, I mean not chasing her from our yards, and making sure she had fresh water - we haven't been feeding her (intentionally). With a real lack of gratitude, she ate the delphiniums just as they were about to bloom a second time when deer have never touched those. They've never touched a hydrangea here either.

But back to what works. Bobbex Deer Repellent has saved my roses, I've begun to alternate Bobbex with Plantskydd after reading rave reviews. Neither needs to be reapplied after a rain. The Scarecrow motion activated water sprayer works flawlessly too, although deer don't run and leap away as shown on the website, they do move on to browse next door....you have to leave it attached to a garden hose so watching the weather report for freezing nights is a must.

I have had great luck with using the product "Liquid Fence". I spray it on the plants first thing when the plants come up in the Spring--or when the leaves start to emerge. I have also put netting over the plants in the winter if they start to get nibbled on. I just bought this netting at the local hardware store. It is a black plastic netting. Apparently, the "Yucky" taste of the Liquid Fence keeps the deer away. I buy this at the garden center for about $12 and consider it well worth the price.
