Earth Day 2008 Seed & Plant Swap

The annual Earth Day Seed and Plant swap in Baton Rouge will be held from 9-12 at the BREC Botanical Garden in Independence Park on Saturday April 19, 2008. It's a great way to meet fellow gardeners and to swap plants. I usually bring native Giganticerula Iris (blue giant), antique roses, bananas and old variety cannas.

I'm in the BR area and never heard of the plant swap. Is is always the same day as Hilltop's spring sale? Is that a good idea?

Hi folks! Granny!!!!! Of course you count!!!!! I'll take pictures of the Mail Pouch "barn" and other stuff so Lee can show you on his computer. Beverly hasn't even seen them yet! I broke my little finger and am waiting to see the hand specialist to be sure I didn't damage any tendons or ligaments. I hope not. This nine fingered typing is for the birds! I keep trying to use the splinted finger and typing really weird stuff! I also pulled the muscles of my chest badly enough that they thought that I might have a broken rib. Sheesh! I'm still going to find a way to pot up those last few plants! There is NO WAY I'll let if spoil my once in a lifetime trip with the boys. We're going snorkeling, para sailing, catamaran sailing, swimming with the dolphins and even some time for just laying on the beach! No heavy lifting for me until after the cruise! I'm overwhelmed with all the stuff I need to do in the next two weeks so I'd better go make another list and start checking things off! Barbi, was that you who wanted the baby arborvitae? I'll save them for you. I did dig up the campion that seeded itself in my stone path before I hurt myself. (*again*) They are a nice biennial. Mine are white but Beverly has some rose ones so who knows what color the seeds the bees made! I have Solomon's seal that needs dividing and some salvia that seeded into my stone path too. The candy tuft jumped the path but it might have to wait 'til fall. I can't wait to see Betty and Ron all the way from Michigan. I keep killing my forget-me-nots! Wonder what I'm doing to them? I hope everyone is doing well and my penchant for injuring myself is not "catching"! ~~Mimi

Fun day! I read the post here & drove down from Alexandria for it. I had arranged to meet a friend who lives in BR & we went over to BREC together. I got lots of good info from the Vine Vendor in the sale area & the garden phlox that I got in the freebie swap area is doing well. Thanks for posting here - you never know who'll read your posts & turn up!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR & TELL YOUR FRIENDS Here is the basic information: Please email me for address (N.J.) Date: Sunday October 5th, 2008 Arrive 10:00 AM (unload plants and food in driveway and park across road on Sedgwick-no street sign on Sedgwick). Walk around garden, socialize, etc. potluck 12 noon Afternoon-plant swap(informal or prearranged trades), visits to nearby public plantings of hardy palms, crape myrtles, etc. TRADING MATERIALS:Labeled plants, cuttings (rooted or unrooted), bulbs, shrubs, happy seedlings, seeds, garden ornaments,garden magazines, extra gardening implements, or any other garden-related items. POT LUCK: Please bring a lunch dish (with serving utensil) to enjoy and share. Bring a chair if you have one (extra chairs here if needed). Plates, plastic silverware, napkins, cups, and iced tea & water will be provided. This will be a wonderful chance to share our passion for gardening, meet other avid and learning gardeners, have a festive and delicious meal, acquire some new plants & share our extras. In addition, there will be a side trip to visit nearby public plantings which include cold-tolerant palms. This should be a FUN, informal day to share our love of gardening! No. It's a local Earth Day event. It was organized by members of the local plant societies and volunteers at the BREC Botantical garden.

Depends. If you are coming from I-10: Take I-10 West to Baton Rouge and exit on to Siegen Ln. Turn Right and take Siegen to Airline Hwy. Turn Left onto Airline Hwy and turn left onto Goodwood. Take a right onto East Airport and then take a left onto Independence Blvd. The Garden is on the left across from the DMV.
If you are coming from I-12: Take I-12 to Baton Rouge and get off on Airline Hwy North. Turn Right onto Airline. Take Airline and turn left onto Goodwood Blvd. Take Goodwood to East Airport. Turn right onto East Airport. Take next Left onto Independence Blvd. The Garden is on the left across from the DMV.

If you get lost, Goodwood is by the Circle K and Woman's Hospital. The Public Library is on Goodwood behind the BREC Garden, Usually there are Earth Day Seed and Plant Exchange signs on the fence at the corner of Goodwood and East Airport during Earth Day Weekend. Some people like myself bring potted plants. Others bring bags of seeds or cuttings in a bucket. I have a truck, so I bring a truck load of stuff. Since I'm working that day, I will only be there for an hour at 9 AM. According to the rules, all items should be clearly labeled. I have lots of extra pots and lots of irises and cannas, I start potting up a few weeks in advance. Last year, I got some neat lillies, ferns a fig tree. Two years ago, I got an Apple Blossom Camellia and some walking irises.
