Hi, Marleah, Since you're in Oregon, I assume you don't have or need an irrigation timer or drip irrigation? I ask because a standard drip irrigation timer for hard-wired irrigation valves is just fine to use as a timer for "misting" cuttings here on the NorCal coast. My timer has 3 programs for each valve and 2 or 3 start times/cycles for each program (I can't remember all the details of that clock). I set up the timer so that it sprayed cuttings with a micro-sprayer at 10am, 11am, 12PM, 1PM, 2PM and 3PM. I found I didn't need mist every 10 minutes and I didn't have to use a mist emitter. I used a specialized Israeli-made micro-sprayer that produces a perfect globe of spray (no dry spots). Everything in that little greenhouse (it was constructed of heavy clear plastic sheeting over white pipe) rooted like crazy. In fact, I left one end open for improved ventilation. It got nice and hot but didn't fry the cuttings. Depending on the scale of your propagation, I know a non-misting propagation alternative for you. Read about Jill Perry and Mel Hulse's Rubbermaid Terrarium set-up. You'll notice that Mel grew his cuttings in 3 inches of potting soil in a closed Rubbermaid box. The brand is important because sunlight degrades these plastics. Rubbermaid lasts longer than Sterlite. I propagate in Rubbermaid boxes in a slightly different way: I put my cuttings in small pots of potting soil, using only Supersoil. The pots are either bands, 4 inch pots or the slightly larger 4 x 6 pots (taller that 4 inches, obviously). Depending on the heat and humidity, I do one of two thing. I place the pots inside the Rubbermaid right side up, with the top on. If I overwater, I can pour out the excess. Or I place the pots on the ground under an arbor where they get filtered light and turn the Rubbermaid upside down over them, without the top. My method requires periodic watering, but it also provides better drainage. In summer, with softwood, cuttings took about 4 to 6 weeks. Softwood cuttings are labor intensive but very satisfying. The very small plants produced take a lot of irrigation and care after they root: grow out takes a lot of time, space and irrigation. Three boxes is about all I can handle at a time. One additional benefit of the Rubbermaid issue is that it gives young plants a very controlled environment after rooting but before they really take off. Wish I could help, I used to use a melnore 3060 aqua timer, and a hose, with some minor adjustments it worked alright.It runs on batteries. If you do a search on misting systems, I think they have some cheap, effective ways to do it listed here. I switched to a mist-a-matic last fall, more expensive, but far better results. I know you can build a system for a lot cheaper than I did! I just love the fact mine hooks up to reclaimed water. It works fine, I was worried about salt etc. build up, but most everything has been fine, and I am not using drinkable water. Andrew

Ruth, I have a similar setup to yours with the pool mister and coarse sand. I do them a little differently though, I have my setup in direct sun that way there is no transition.After they have rooted, I pot them up to gallon pots take them away from the mister and mist them several times a day with a spray bottle.I have lost none of them through the summer doing that.I only hand mist for a week or so. Getting mine through the winter,different story :)

there is a plant propogation book i have wherein the author describes his own mist system. that author has a large black coil of hose in the roof of his greenhouse so that water can be heated before reaching the mist nozzles. that's at least one vote for using warm water and keeping the cuttings reasonably warm as they root. just thought i would toss that in! lol. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by: mosaic z8 LA (My Page) on Sun, May 11, 03 at 11:59 With such a setup you could probably root roses under mist all winter here in Louisiana. I also have the Melnor timer, and it does seem a bit confusing about its ability to do a mist cycle, but what you're doing is programing it to do one cycle (on in the am; off in the pm) and punching in a choice of watering pattern, in this case the off for 10" on for 2" pattern. I believe the idea behind the pattern was/is actually to help prevent water run-off when doing overhead watering by allowing the water to soak in between the on phases. I bought this particular timer though because when I looked at it my mind said "Ah! Mist!" (heh), even though the reason I bought it at the time was to keep a new patch of zoysia sod watered until it rooted in. My batteries did last all season last year, but it was only opening that valve 4x a day for 3 weeks, and then 1x every 4 days for a couple of months. The water bill is not an issue because we have an irrigation system (there is an annual fee but it is not based on usage). And even though I had a pressure regulator on there, I kept having a problem with the heads blowing off! (Their drippers work perfectly by the way so it's nothing against the company) I ordered foggers from Misty Mate this year and they put out a super fine fog. Perfect for propagation. They are a litte more expensive than the ones from Dripworks but worth it. And if you ask they will ship the misting heads for $1.50. I went to HD and bought a 10-24 tap and drill set (3.00) and drilled holes in my 1/2" cvpvc and the heads just screwed right in! I bought a Melnor timer at HD for $39 and it has 1 minute spray options so I've got it set for 1 minute every 10 minutes. Can't remember the model number but it's not the one on the HD website. I hope to finish my new propagation box soon. I built one on a stand this year so I can move it around easily. Wouldn't you know, HD has plastic sheeting made just for greenhouses that I used! It's not the real thick heavy stuff either. It's only 4mil and is crystal clear see-thru! Hopefully I'll be finished this week!
