Fall Propogation?

I recently purchased a Macrophylla Ayesha, and while I was planting it, a few of the tops of some stems were lopped off. I felt bad discarding them, so I just stuck them in the ground.

Its a week later, and they still look quite well, very perky and I even see more leaves sprouting up.

I would LOVE more of these hydrangeas, but the truth is, I've never tried to propogate in the Fall or Winter. They are underneath two large pitch pines, so there is some shelter, but that area can get tons of snow, that will never get shoveled as its in the rear end of the garden which is almost never visited during the winter months.

My thinking is to leave them there as long as possible, undisturbed as they really seems happy. Then once it really starts to get cold, could be a matter of weeks, put them in pots and bring them in the house.

I've never propogated a hydrangea by any other method other than layering. Do you think they would do okay indoors over the winter? Has anyone ever tried this? Any tips?

Thanks!
