nc gardeners want to donate plants and seeds

We were planning on sending seeds and plants next spring, to help people recover from Hurricane Katrina. Perhaps this thread could be a list of plants that people might want, so we'll have an idea of what to bring to the swap in the spring -- we're two zones away so the regular stuff might not be quite the thing.

That's sweet. We're doing the same on the Florida forum, and on the brugmansia forum.

Hopefully, there will be houses livable enough for the yards to be planted next year.

Clover, SC Spring Plant/Seed Exchange Join us for our first Spring Plant Lovers Exchange Sunday May 19, 2013 at 256 Community Park Drive Clover, S.C. 29710 From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Bring 'healthy' (no bugs allowed), indoor or outdoor plants to trade but not limited to just plants, i.e., pots, stepping stones, garden magazines & books, seeds, bulbs - - bring what you don't want to trade for something you do want. Please label your plants with simple but as much information as you have for their new owners, i.e., plant name, growing requirements (shade/sun), perennial , annual, herb, houseplant; any info you feel would be pertinent to your plant. This will make it easier for the new plant owner to know where to plant. Try to establish your plants in pots at least a week before the plant swap, keep watered and keep in the shade. Please make sure there is ample root system - don't cut off the stem and leave the root in the ground. (We would all like to take home growing plants). For seed packets: on the envelope or container clearly print the name of the plant, color of the flowers (if any) and the approximate date gathered. If you don't have plant pots, some suggestions would be cans, cottage cheese, yogurt containers, plastic water jugs, etc... Be sure to put a hole in the bottom of the container for drainage. If you have an abundance of plant containers you no longer want, please bring them to the swap! Some one very well may need them for the next swap. Do not remove any plants from the table that do not belong to you. Remember, this is a "free" plant exchange -- items for sale are not permitted. Please do not leave children unattended during the meet - supervision is a must. There will be a jar at the swap if anyone would like to donate change to help pay for the shelter. Please help us clean up after the shelter rental. Park rules: Trash goes in dumpsters, not roll-out can. No alcohol. Clover Community Park Bethel Street/SC-55 to Quinn Road [Circle K on corner directly across from the Clover Post Office], turn right onto Community Park Drive. Greeting from another Michigan wintersower! I have some asters, not sure what kind though, they were snatched from some-one elses flowerbed(with permission).Drk purple and about two ft high. How about some rugosa roses and grape hyacinths?? Echinacea would be good too, the kids might not see the flowers but could watch the birds that eat the seed. I have all those seed. You might also try perennial sweet pea if you've got the room-mine are still around but I don't have any seed right now. Also try wild violets-I have plants but no seed. -B

Jean - I hope you meant the 25th (the Wake Forest market is only on Saturdays). Lets aim for Saturday Sept 1st. This next weekend is a big grilling festival at the market and I need to haul as many sellable plants as possible to make up for the lackluster sales these past couple of hot and dry marketdays. I will also go through all my various stashes of plants to find more goodies by Fall Swap. And next spring I should have even more after sowing seeds all winter. I have Rue. But the caterpillars on it are eating it down to the nub so I doubt I will get seeds. I plan on finding some seed somewhere and growing a bunch of it, so at some point I will have some available. I do have some parsley potted up and some Agastache (Hyssop). If you find any of the annual butterfly weed (Asclepias currasavica)(sp?), I have been able to over winter the roots and got bigger plants the next spring. I simply dig them up after first frost and pot them up and store them out of the way. They are easy from seed also. Pentas are a great nectar plant and they are easy from cuttings but they won't overwinter outside. Good luck

here in New Orleans the community gardens were hit pretty hard... anyone wanting to help one way is to contact Parkway Partners (parkwaypartners.com) - they run the community gardens and will disburse plants and seeds where needed.

thanks for any help - i know my garden was partially bulldozed by the neighboring UHaul while they repaired their cinderblock wall!

Like "down south LA" I live in Covington. I lost so many trees and when they fell, they uprooted or smushed so many of my plants and gardens. (Not to mention putting a hole in my house!) My poor yard is pretty rough looking right now. It is so nice to have the outpouring of concern and the offers of help. I too look forward to Spring. We are "winter sowing" and working on restoring what we can but any help anyone offers is greatly appreciated!

Hello, my name is Dannon Trahan. I have been working to create a bioremediation/permaculture garden on the University of New Orleans campus. Parts of our campus and all of the surrounding area was flooded. Many people won't and can't return to the area. Luckily, the University sustained only minor damage compared to the community surrounding it. Water was about 8 ft in some of the neighborhoods. So I have decided to create a bioremediation/ permaculture garden for the students, in an effort to lift everyone's spirits and try to help stimulated rebuilding in the area. I could use mustard green seeds, they remove arsenic. I'm not sure what other winter plants are available for the purpose of removing toxins from the soil but any seeds sent will be used. I would love to get a Pau-Pau tree and a lemon tree. We will also be creating an herb spiral. I hope my response to your generous offering gets to you. I have worked hard to develop this project, "Rootbound: Strength In Structure", and still have a long way to go. Thank you again.

I hate to admit it but yes I'm a "newbie" here on this website. I feel like I'm at an AA meeting or something. LOL Anyway here's a lil bit about me...

Hello everyone! Goodness, I am glad to say that we survived Katrina, THANK heavens. My husband and I were planning on moving out to our property in the country later on in life but later has become more sooner instead! Once we saw the mass destruction from Katrina(hurricane) we decided to go ahead and move more North to our 8.5 acres. Anyway, our land is cleared like a blank canvas awaiting a masterpiece to be painted. I am here to say that I love planting different flowers, roses, and trees to see a spectacular end result. WOW!!! I am hoping to have our home completed here in the next 6 months then I'll really be able to get to work on some landscaping around the house. SO far I have started a rose garden, herbs, different flowering bulbs, fruit trees, live oaks, blueberry bushes and am looking forward to creating even more fun areas to enjoy for a lifetime. My lil boy loves to go out and pick the fruit right off the bush or tree and start eating it. Well, I hope all is well with everyone and I look forward to making some new smelly garden friends. :)

BTW..I already checked in the "newbie" section. LOL
