hydrangea leafs got brown spots and blooms ....

My hydrangea's leaf's has brown spots on them and the blooms turn brown, before they get their color, and dies.

What is wrong? Maybe not enought water; too much. Please help; any information appreciated. Dont know the name of these, just know they were pink when we first moved here 4 months ago. and have one that has white and green leaves.

I also have the same problem. The flower turn brown before it gets pink. Also some leaves have brown in the edges.

I only have the perennial M. fistulosa and M. didyma. I moved my M. fistulosa last fall because for the first few years in that location it also would get irregular brown spots on the leaves from the bottom up. Eventually the leaves would go completely necrotic and fall off. I couldn't figure out what it was, but in the new location they do just fine. That doesn't help you, but sure is curious to me too since nothing else in that area has an issue then or now..mint family or not. I chalked it up to too much mid-day sun (scorch), low humidity and not enough water. I used to have pictures of this but must have deleted them last year :(

Cercospora Leaf Spot. You get brownish and-or purplish spots. Some lesions decay to the point where the leaf ends with a hole. Usually caused by the presence of the fungi and overhead watering; common in the middle of or in late Summer. There are some fungicides that you can use but they are expensive so in my two infected shrubs, I use these practices: water the soil early in the mornings and not the leaves; replace the mulch if the infestation is large; dispose of infected leaves whose affected surface area is large (say 1/3 of the leaf? 1/4?); throw away infected leaves in the trash and not in the compost pile; dispose of the blooms and the dried out leaves in the Fall also in the trash; dispose of plant debris in the trash; do not plant other shrubs nearby to improve air circulation; if using fungicides, start at the first sign of trouble (or as soon as the rainy season starts) as the fungicides only control the issue and do not prevent it. When using fungicides, it is best two use two fungicides with different active ingredients: apply the first one; if the label says to reapply after 7 days, apply the second one instead; if the label of the 2nd one says to reapply after 10 days then after 10 days, apply the first one... and so forth. springwood_gardens, I went to the Dallas Arboretum and saw their misters in action and wow, if I had the money, time and resources, I sure would not mind using those around the azaleas here! Just hook up the water source, set the unit to mist a certain amt, flip the switch and let 'er rip. I know it is waaay too complicated for me but hey, one can dream!!! Maybe Santa Claus will put one for me. Hee hee hee!!! Alas, I would probably never use it on my hydrangeas for fear of spreading powdery mildew, which is all over this area's Crape Myrtles & Euonymous or for fear of spreading leaf spot that my drip irrigation is helping minimize.

That's just the natural aging process of the flowers. Some can develop some spotting naturally.....others will do so in response to bad weather or even mechanical damage. Nothing to be concerned about ;-))

Hello, Annie. A picture would be very useful in this case since now is a time when many hydrangeas develop fungal diseases. Leaf spot is the most common and, at times, looks like brown spots. Most people take no action this late in the year because the plant is about to go dormant and the leaves will dry off. At that point, you can just throw the leaves in the trash (not the compost bin).

Hydrangea blooms change color many times throughout the year, specially in the fall. Many colored varieties will be turning brown this time of the year so, if yours is doing this, it may be doing that simply because it is "that time of the year". That is not to say that this is THE reason though. Premature change of color towards brown can also indicate that the plant is not getting getting enough water.

Since you are concerned about watering issues, manually check it. On a daily basis, insert a finger into the soil to a depth of 4" and see how the soil feels. If it feels dry or almost dry then water. If it feels moist, do nothing. If it feels wet, try to see why since the soil should not be wet unless it has recently rained or something like that. After a while, you should notice that you are watering on a certain schedule (every two/three/etc days) so set your sprinkler to water on that frequency. As the temperatures change (10-15 degrees) and stay there, you may want to manually recheck. By the time your plant goes dormant, you can reduce watering to once a week or once every two weeks. Remember to water during dry winters too.

Jfraga, what variety of hydrangea do you have? Browned leaves that start brown in the edges indicates lack of moisture so check your plant as I described for Annie and water it. If you have a small (new) shrub, you can start with 1g of water every time you water.
