Rose companion for Limelight hydrangea
Comments (6)Thank you so much for your suggestions. I had considered roses with wine tones such as Munstead Wood. I noticed that a volunteer seedling of Brazilian verbain next to the limelights looked really good and that gave me that idea. The all white roses is a great idea, one that has been stuck in my head now, thanks hoovb!! :-) I think a white rose with a "milky" tone to it might work well. I would think the "snow" white roses would look to bright white next to the more milky hydrangea blossoms. I am not sure how pink tones would look planted next to the hedge. One of my first thoughts were some of the English roses that have pink and also yellowish tones like Jubilee Celebration... on the other hand, I walked past a flower show where they had deep red roses combined with lime-ish colored filler plants and it looked modern and fresh... What are your thoughts on something like Lady of Shallott or a warm pink like Princess Alexandra of Kent in groups of several plants each on front that hedge?...See MoreButterflies love my Quick Fire Hydrangeas
Comments (7)Welcome Ruth! Congrats on the Monarch cats!! I almost never find eggs. I am happy to snag the caterpillars when I find them. As for butterfly size difference, I believe that there can be pretty significant variations in size even within the same butterfly species. So, it's normal to see different sized Monarchs. Just look for those lines, and the Viceroy will never fool you again! So cool to have the Viceroy! Angie " Early in the season when few flowers are available Viceroys feed on aphid honeydew, carrion, dung, and decaying fungi. Later generations feed more often at flowers, favoring composites including aster, goldenrod, joe-pye weed, shepherd's needle, and Canada thistle.Caterpillar Hosts: Trees in the willow family (Salicaceae) including willows (Salix), and poplars and cottonwoods (Populus). Comments (10)Hi Stillwelljill - Sorry for not checking in right away - 'got a bit busy w/ grandkids. I'll be glad to let you know how quickly QF changes outfit ... she has not, as yet, opened her clusters, just getting larger & fuller. Actually, I do keep progress notes on my small H collection, particularly this season due to unusually long Winter & very strange/devastating Spring, here in IA. I was warned early on, by our local nurseryman to expect our dependable perennial bloomers to be 1 to 2 weeks late. All of my paniculatas are in full/sun sites & seem to love where they are. QF is planted right next to Little L ... I too am anxious to see how she opens up & how long her changes take to the mature-stage-color. LL just started showing her first, couple of tiny bud-clusters ... it's amazing tho, how very quickly LL will fill w/ buds once she starts! I agree that QF was quite upright last season - I'm curious how she handles all the blossoms once they all open. I think that the site you describe will be just perfect - since you said that the nursery is having a good sale & you have space for both ... need I say more!!! LOL - BTW have you checked the thread I started on AB, about a month ago? Silvergold posted her photo ... I know that AB is her favorite! Good luck & I promise to keep you posted on QF!...See MoreQuick Fire in full bloom!
Comments (5)ditas, it's great to "see" you again! My Limelight is indeed early this year, with the warm temperature and plentiful rain fall earlier on (and now we have a drought! Sigh...). It's been a very strange spring!!! hydrangeasnohio, you noticed my Weigela My Monet too? I love that little shrub! it's so colorful and well-behaved, I got another one for another location last year too! It really brightens up any semi-shade spot. Yours is looking so healthy and lovely too! Regarding my Limelight, I pruned it very, very hard last year. It resulted in a less full shrub with lots of new canes and big blooms which flopped over a little bit after a rainstorm. This year, I decided to just selectively prune it, taking off some branches that were a bit unruly and crossing over other canes, and then just trimmed off the other ones. So far, I like the results - the shrub appears to be fuller and more uniform. Let's see how it will look when it blooms. I expect the blooms to be smaller, but that's OK because I think that when the blooms were too huge last year, they did look a little gawdy.... LOL. We shall see! :-)...See Moreostrich
