Fluorescent ballast heat
Comments (3)I will certainly get warm, but I wouldn't call it hot. "Hot" may mean that you ballast is failing or faulty. All ballasts produced for a very long time now have built-in overheating cutouts but it is still possible to get some melting of insulation or internal components....See MoreRope light bottom heat?
Comments (8)I was wondering about that too. I can't imagine the lights would be a very efficient means of heating. Obviously, much of the electrical energy would be used to produce light rather than heat, so there is a certain amount of wasted energy cost. This is one case where you would WANT your lights to be inefficient (at producing light) so that you are getting more heat for your dollar. I would also caution anyone thinking of using regular christmas lights that aren't well shielded by the plastic "rope". Obviously there are safer way to create heat. Maybe not cheaper though......See MoreCheap Bottom Heat/Seed Set up
Comments (4)I try to recycle waste for my needs where possible, so for cheap heat, I'd be looking for wasted heat. Surely all the heat from your refrigerator and freezer go somewhere, feel around the sides and back and see what you find. Can you place the seedlings above the hot spot? Televisions, DVD players, computers and other sizable electronic devices create waste heat as they run. Do have a hot spot near a cluster of them that you could tuck one or more trays into? Dryers blow a lot of hot air as they run. Could you insulate a small structure around the exhaust port, capture and save that heat?...See Moreheated bird bath - can I use a heated dog bowl w rocks on bottom
Comments (2)That's what I use. Just no rocks. During winter, they just use it to drink out of. The problem with rocks is when you dump the water out to clean the bowl, you'll need to remove all the rocks and clean them too cause they'll get funky. I don't worry about birds bathing to much during winter to require a shallow bowl. They capitalize on melt puddles when weather warms in between cold spells. I provide water in the heated dog bowl just for drinking. I've had mine over 10 years and no problems...unlike heated bird baths which last about 2 years in my experience. Plus, my dog doesn't mind sharing with the birds!...See Morepdsyme
