Very basic gardening/hydrangea question

I am a novice novice novice gardener, making my first real try at doing things right. Previous experience has been a sheffalara that thrived on being ignored, and random houseplants that eventually gave up the ghost on my watch.

I LOVE the look of hydrangeas, but having never had one myself I'm curious about something. Those lovely photos I see of a plant in the ground or pot/planter with lots of blooms... is each stem/stalk one plant, or do they branch? I have no idea if a planter full of hydrangeas is necessarily one plant, or two or six or whatever. It's easy to tell with a tree whether multiple trunks are one plant ore multiples, but not so easy with the bushier things like hydrangeas ;)

Assuming that the answer is "it varies" -- how many stems or heads can a good mature hydrangea produce?
