Impatiently waiting

Can you hear that? Rap, Rap Rap! Tap, Tap, Tap! That's me rapping my fingers on the desk and tapping my feet. I swear my irises are taunting me this year! After a nasty bout with iris borers last year, I have what looks like a nice little flower garden of irises. I have quite a few scapes. They should put on a good show this year (fingers crossed). One iris put up a scape at least a week and a half ago and hasn't bloomed yet. I know its purple, but it was a freebee I got from Nancy a year or two ago. I'm dying to see it bloom! It has two friends that look like their close to blooming too. One's a yellow one I also got here from Nancy and another I bought from Schreiners, Gnu.

I feel like a little kid the day before their birthday. How can you stand the waiting game!? I am eagerly awaiting their blooms.

I am glad you are happily, if impatiently waiting for your buds to unfurl. I have some Cheers blooming now, but since we are recovering from having the second coldest April on record, and since we just had six inches of rain in four days, they sort of look like used tissues. Lots of mine were damaged by the 18 degree frosts we had last month, and their stalks are short and contorted. But Tom Johnson is going to bloom for the first time, so I too am getting impatient. This is my second spring here at a new address, and the soil is much nicer for iris, and they seem to be happy, except for the weather, of course. So I am happy, too. Good luck, and I look forward to your photos.

Here in New England, we got an early tease in early March with 70 degree temps and then it's been in the 20's at night, ever since and we've had snow twice. The 'teases' make it harder to wait. I was doing fine waiting and not expecting warmer weather until late March, then the warm weather tricks you into hoping that spring is just starting early this year and you find yourself getting into the gardening mode and oops! Winter's back again. I turned on the water to the outdoor spigots and had to turn it off again. I don't find myself waiting for the roses to bloom though. I have so many other bulbs, perennial and shrubs that will bloom before they do, that once the growing season starts there is always something to entertain me. Even before bloom, just seeing the green growing and going out to check, to make sure all the perennials came back, to see if there's any reseeding that I was hoping for with certain plants. Not to mention projects, projects, projects. I've always got my mind wrapped around a project or two that needs doing. This year it was a new raised vegetable bed, last year it was a rock edge along a perennial border. That is what is so great about gardening, there is always something interesting to do.

or rather I should say this, I feel like a Pirate who has discovered The Ultimate Cave of Jewels from CharlesB!color> whoo-hoo, whoo-hoo! It's like the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime find! I always tell my Rose forumer/friend/gardener Boxofrox that he is the Magna Cum Laude landscape designer with the grounds-up drilling, research, to completed paradise. Charles, when I saw your very first gallery, I thought wowwwwwww, that is one Magna Cum Laude Orchidarian! (sorry about my invented vocabulary- lol, instead of rosarians for roses I swapped out the same translation). Plus if there was a Richard Avedon of Orchids it'd be you.color> Your orchids totally glow and amaze me one after the other. So spectacular! The colors, the textures the patterns. And of course the whole sway of arching compositions like some intricate ballet of suspended timeless beauty. A true gift of photography and unforgettable orchid blooms combined. And it's just not the orchids, but you have also left magic for other flowers as well. I am reposting your photos here so everyone can remarvel at their exquisite detail. Everyone, this is only the bare tip of Charles'Crystal Magical Iceberg. I was also wowed by the photos you took of your dogs in the garden. But thought uh, "Serena you better cease-and-desist." You better ask permission first! for the gorgeously photographed dogs. My poor lovely Eluane (border collie) does not have an owner who can take good photos of her in the garden. Your dogs look so happy and full of personality too. Eluane sends them her greetings! I just took this photo of her just a little over 2 weeks ago after her AKC agility trial (Christ-blessed miracle that we got a 1st place ribbon). She's been to just 2 agility trials so far(dogs running through hurdles, tunnels, dogwalks, yeah all the crazy stuff). The next AKC trial won't come until February.

Wow your plants look great, very healthy. I'm in zone 5 also but not even flowers yet except for this potted porch tomato plants I bought which has baby tomatoes on it. I use to use SuperThrive on my roses and the claims it made for roses seemed to be true it would cause all sorts of miracles on problem plants. I had never thought to use it on my tomatoes. I can remember it being very expensive at least for my pocketbook at the time. I'll google it and see what I come up with because I want a good crop this year last years was less than spectaular. Thanks, for sharing the images of your beautiful & robust plants! :)

wooHoo! I'm happy to say that the two purples bloomed (Gnu and the no name freebie)! I'm very happy with them. I also had a yellow iris (another no name freebie) in the vegetable garden, not the flower bed as I was anticipating, bloom! I'm so excited! I'll see if I can get some pictures posted this weekend.

Aseedisapromise, I live in central NY so I know about weird , cold weather, but this year, I've cringed every time I've seen the weather in the Midwest. We had a couple of late frosts too (but not down to 18 degrees!). Memorial Day weekend is suppose to be chilly with highs only in the 50's. I guess I won't work up much of a sweat working on the vegetable and flower gardens!

Hosenemesis, there was a very generous gardener here, who offered some of her divisions for postage. That's how it started.

Well, believe me there are a lot of very happy ranchers here who don't have to sell off their stock after all, since this rain means there might be hay for them next winter. That's worth three sad looking Cheers blooms. There are more open today, and they are fine, with some Dublin coming along next to them, and some Black Magic oldies further along. I really like having this forum to look at everyone else's photos. It helps me get even more excited for my own to get going. Maybe these newly opened ones will be worth photographing!
